For all the flack BMW took in the early years, the iDrives I've had in an 07 x5, '11 x3, and from test drives in the F30 (seemingly the same as my wife's x3, till the new nav is out anyway), BMW does a MUCH better job with this than Audi or Mercedes.
I expect opinions of this vary based on each person's frame of reference from previous cars, and technical aptitude.....

+1 , the new (er) iDRive is very intuitive and supereasy to use. The older ones not so much.
