I'm thinking of covering it with some sort of reflective tape, but wondering if there's a more important reason for it being there, i.e. letting the heat out so the sunroof doesn't explode (this did happen in the e9x apparently).

Tint the sunroof glass with a ceramic film. You will get excellent heat rejection.
