This is a known issue with certain phones and there isn't really a magic bullet fix for it. There are just so many different phones out there running different operating systems with different Bluetooth hardware that it's impossible for all of them to work flawlessly.

The only sure-fire way of making sure you have a phone that works is by checking bmwusa.com/bluetooth to see if your phone is on that list. If it is and you're having problems, and your car and the phone are running the most recent software, then it might be a car issue. The vast majority of the time an issue like this crops up, it's either due to the phone not having the most recent software update or the phone just not being entirely compatable with the car.

I have seen very very few Bluetooth issues relating to iPhones and Blackberries. Most of the ones I see are from non-major Android-based devices.
