You actually CAN engage the clutch in most cars at idle so long as you do it smoothly. But this isn't the best for the longevity of your clutch.

No I've been driving sticks since my first car at 17. Just seemed somewhat a dramatic departure from my M3 6 speed manual. Very smooth.
