Track driver's would also complain about OE 225mm tires on a 3400 Lb car as well though.

Square setups are typically sought after to maximize track performance but I don't think BMW went with the OE size it did for this reason. I'd say the complaints are valid, but only from a subjective aesthetic viewpoint.

The OE non-staggered setup would be cheaper (half the part numbers for wheels and half the part numbers for tires). Not sure if this was the reasoning, but could have been a factor. To me, a 3-Series doesn't need staggered wheels in the most basic form; that's what options & aftermarket are for
