Old thread is still old, but I wanted to add a data point. We have a 2009 328i that just crossed 176k miles. Mostly highway driving. Oil is changed ONLY when the OBC tells us to, so every 15k-18k miles. It has been perfectly reliable from a mechanical perspective, other than needing an oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and oil filter housing gasket - all of which are normal for a car this age. Looks nice and clean under the valve cover.
