I guess you didn't read the article if you think the 3 is a "better car in every way". According to the author the ATS had better steering, better handling, more power at the mid and top end, better observed fuel economy, better engine sound, etc.
And he admits his choice of the 3 was mostly due to the larger back seat for his family.
