Not true. There's obviously family styling cues like the grill, headlights and taillights but BMW does exactly the same thing. From the side and behind, a 3 and 5 series are very hard to distinguish. The point is, Audi is not the only one. Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, Mercedes and others establish brand identity through styling cues.
Regarding the 2 series prototype, to me in these pictures it's a cross between a Jetta and an A4. Then again the pictures don't show any detail, it's black and it's still disguised.
