In Europe you have a BMW factory option (3AC) for an trailer hitch. In fact it folds out of the way such that it is hidden when not needed. You get a button in the trunk for this.
I regularly see BMWs here with trailers, or bike racks on the trailer hitch.
So saying that the car is not designed for it is simply not true.
