///M competes with RS not S, ie the M3 competes with RS4 not S4. the M performance cars (previously iS cars...) give BMW 2 competitors to S cars and one would think/hope the M335 would be a step ahead of the S4 not on par with it.

It's not people making a mistake, it's Audi giving up the game.
The S4 used to be the M3 competitor. Now that it's not even a contest, people started comparing the S4 to the 335 to be more charitable. Audi's not "doing a better job differentiating", they are bringing the RS4 to the US finally, in order to compete.
