I second that statement. Living in the NY metro area, The roads will eat up 19" rubber. I have a friend with 535 M sport with 19" rims. He has blown 5 tires in 1st year ownership! Some on "minor" potholes. The tire insurance package is like $2K. I would stick with 18".
As far as AWD in NE. I sold my beloved 328i when I moved here for A4 quattro, thinking I needed AWD for snow. I probably would have been ok with a dedicated set of snow tires. AWD really only helps in deep snow, ie unplowed roads with 6" or more snow; or climbing steep grades. So if you can stay off roads until they are plowed and only need to get around when it is light snow, I think u ok with RWD with snows. I think this is how most of Northern Europe does it. I currently have 535xi with all-seasons and have gotten stuck on steep grade driveway that was unplowed. My next car will likely be F30 335i, back to RWD and manual tranny.
