I agree. We don't buy gifts but at times we do something nice for the other. My husband donates 6.3% of his after taxes earnings to children in third world countries, and sharpens all my cooking knives monthly.
I'm not as good, so I try to waste as little of his time as possible in things he doesn't give a shit in and I try not to steal all his tax returns.
If we buy gifts, they are needed. I got an epic knife set a while back and he is set for socks for the next 700 years. He spent 30 hours in the woods looking for my idiot dog because he knew I wanted it back, called in favors to get police dogs to search for the idiot and so on. Now all our kids have been puking for 6days and I'm handling it.
Gifts in a serious relationship are different. None of us are in the need of carats instead of the support.
