I live in Norway where we get a lot of snow. I have driven 4 BMWs with only rear wheel drive. This is not a problem at all with winter tires.
The best tires you can get in Norway are the Nokian Hakkepelita R. Way better than Michelin and everythinx else. Don't know if you can get them in the US.
