It's all a function of time and the quality of the leatherette. Do a search for Sensatec.

If vinyl degrades you have no recourse but to replace it. Leather is easily reconditioned.

The bottom line is that you can't universally say that one is better than the other. Geographic location, care, where the vehicle is parked all way very heavily on the durability of the upholstery.
