Previously it was done over the counter, new tax disc issued and form to get plates made if needed, then you had to change them asap.

Thanks Mat, does this not mean that it could cause a delay at the dealer though, as presumably they'll have to wait for the ~10 days after taking the retention doc to the DVLA to do the first registration?
