I thought it was for the coupe/saloon differences...
I saw someone say this on another forum.
2-4-6 will be coupes/convertibles, with the 1series coupe being 2 and the 3series coupe being the 4.
1-3-5-7 will be GT/sedan/wagon, with the 1 series hatchback retaining hatchback form, 3-5-7 all having GT form, and the 3-5 having a wagon form.
I don't know if this makes sense, but this is what I saw on a different forum...
