Its a BMW USA thing
The euro models have a cover with round holes to "hide" the cooler, but just like on the M Sport where they deleted the foglights BMW USA wanted more cooling potential because USA cars are far more likely to be used on a track and in the rest of the world where insurance doesnt allow it.
