I had the same issue, but with myself, when I first got the car. I even mentioned it to the salesman. They're not set up to give what most cars do in terms of leverage because of their placement (near the hinge rather then the middle of the door).
That said, it took me about 2 days to get the feel and now I don't even notice it. I think it's all in our mind, it doesn't have the same "feel" so we over/under compensate. In all actuality, I think it requires about the same effort as it does to just about any other car with the handles in what we normally would consider normal placement.
They do look nicer regardless...
