I have to see this in person before I give an opinion, I wasn't a big fan of the 5GT when I saw it pics at first, but I do see them a lot where I live and I actually like it. The interior of the 5GT is gorgeous and BMW did a great job of achieving their goal of giving us a GT (GrandTouring) car with a very luxurious and spacious interior.
As for the side vent, I think they can do away with them. I don't see a purpose for it and it's a bit distracting on the car. I hope there is time to remove it from the 4 series if its too late on the GT cars...
