The reality of the situation is that BMW is going to sink billions of dollars into hybrid/electric vehicle development over the next several years. The most advanced driving engineers are going to be working on the hybrid side. Sure, it might be a while to catch up to the incredible ///M cars that they already make, but it is definitely head-in-the-sand attitude to ignore that the next "great" BMW will undoubtedly be some form of hybrid or electric car.
