I have owned and driven many cars over the last 3 years (mid life crisis), but most here would not consider them BMW competitors.
The only 2 that would qualify marginally would be the Acura TSX and TL.
Even though the TSX was half the car my 328i was, I actually really enjoyed owning it. It's biggest problem for us was the backseat with minimal leg room.
The TL was nice, but it was just a boat. Too big and too wide. I had the AWD model, and I didn't enjoy averaging about 17 mpg overall in it. However, it did have the best stereo and seats of any car I have owned.
