I've used Bumpshox on my e90 and can attest to it working. I know people backed into the car because after a month or whatever the unit would be slightly loose, tightened the screws back up and you're in business. Best of all no scratches! I liked that one as well as its got those flaps above and below for a little extra protection. For the back I recommend Parking Armor.
Yes, NYC sucks for public parking, no respect other people's cars unfortunately.
If you want protection you'll want to go big, otherwise you can go with removable bumper bras for the front , google it.
