Winter Set of Tires Necessary Here?

Who here in the DMV runs a separate set of wheels and tires during the winter time?

The winters get too cold to keep summers year round and the compound cracks, but winters feel like they'd only be useful for maybe 2 months.

I'm interested in what y'all do?

I've mostly ran an all season "performance" tire, like a Conti DWS or similar, all year around. Had separate sets for my WRX years ago, but only b/c I scored a deal on complete wheel/tire AlpinPA4 setup. I didn't feel it was much of an improvement, honestly, and just went with a single DWS setup on my F30.

Dom,

I have been running a separate set of OEM wheels with snow tires for the last 4 winters and I think its worth it on my daily F31. As you stated when the temps get very low most summer and even all season tires get compromised. Switching them out is not a big deal every Fall and Spring and it keeps your good set of wheels from getting blasted with sand and salt for 3 months. The winter tires really shine when the temps get below 30 degrees, but are like driving on chewed bubble gum in the spring when we get a jump in temps to the 70s. Gotta be aware of that and get them off when the weather warms up.

I have two sets and used to run winter/summers. The winters have gotten so mild here that the winter tires just aren't worth it anymore. If you're further west, it might still make sense, but in NoVA, there's no point.

I switched my winters out for DWS06+ last fall. We had a single "real" snow day, and I was able to make it out twice that day. It was extremely clear that they aren't a snow tire, and I had a much harder time with grip. But now that it's warmed up, I haven't felt pressured to immediately swap over to the summers. I can already tell the all seasons will last me a lot more miles than my winters did as well.
