Post Extra USB Audio/Apps Socket Mod Guide

I just thought I'd share this little mod I did today, it gives you an extra USB socket which can be connected to behind the dash as I've done with my Brodit phone mount, or it can go in the glovebox where there is a hole already there for it.

It is handy if like me you have the phone mounted on the dash and want to use connecteddrive apps without running a cable from the USB under the armrest, also so you can have 2 devices attached without the need to swap them over, for instance a USB flash drive/HDD and a phone/ipod.

This is for cars with NBT/NBTevo Pro Media (maybe also newer Business Media) and no factory EBT (unless you want to disconnect the snap in adapter), as this second USB goes in the snap in adapters USB2 socket on the back of the head unit, which is only empty if the car does not have the snap in adapter preperation. Also you need to code EBT for it to work.

Guide:

1) Buy this cable and socket: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-CIC-NB...YAAOSw2s1UvjHy

2) Remove head unit as shown in this video (ignore removing the head units plugs at end):

3) Connect cable to the empty USB2 socket as shown in pics below.

4) Either plug your phone cable in and feed out under the dash trim, or run the cable to the left hand side of glovebox and remove the little square cover to reveal the USB socket hole.

5) Code EBT, see my guide for that here: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ighlight=idiot

5) Open BMW Connected app to automatically connect, or select in External devices where it will show up as the snap in adapter device.

Don't forget to appreciate this post if you found it helpful!

Nice work, very clean looking as well, I might have to give this a go, started keeping my phone on the dash as well and can't be bothered with any more snap-in adapters!

Good post teaston, should be useful for a few folk. Makes a change from the usual repeated debates!

But the key question of course with this mod is.... Will it affect the warranty?!

Thank you for the detailed guide. May I ask you whether the cable is of exact length or should we tie it in the back of the HU to avoid rattle? Also if the car is already coded for EBT then it's a matter of the cable to connect is it correct?

Great guide and would love an extra USB port because I'd like to connect my phone for BMW apps at the same time as a USB stick of mp3s. However knowing my luck I'd have major squeaks & creaks after reassembly

It's 1m long so guess it would be the right length to reach the glovebox hole, but for me I had to coil it all up as my phone lead could easily reach the back of the HU.

I've had no squeaks or creaks & I took the HU out of my 330d multiple times!

Is there a usb socket in the glovebox? Ive bought a cheap tracker and would like to stash it somewhere discreet to power it.

You'll need a permanent live feed from the battery for that as the USB and 12 V sockets turn off a few minutes after you lock the car.

I'm ok with that it is battery powered so just to top it up

What connection does the tracker have in it, is it a fixed USB lead or is there a micro/mini USB socket on it?

I would tap the wires that feed the under glovebox 12v socket so it's all hidden behind the dash with one of these (depending if it micro or mini USB):

And some scotch locks:

This is the UK supplier for Brodit, you need the clip specific for your car, then there's a choice of holders, I went for the active holder for device with skin (phone case)

I installed an additional USB cable from the head unit to the provided cut-out in the glovebox - works a treat and BMW Apps from my iPhone 5S are displayed without any problems that I've encountered.

One piece of advice - get yourself a fishing tool : trying to thread the USB cable to the back of the glovebox is an absolute bitch without one. I tried and tried to remove the entire glovebox but no joy.

That is a great find been trying to find a place to buy a cable to get my cradle to work so this might do the trick if not might go down the brodit route as well
