Doesn't it say it only engages when the seatbelt if off? I know when I open the door when parking, my seatbelt is still on. I would assume this shouldn't be an issue unless you like to remove your seatbelt prior to completion of parking.

The right side mirror is also programmed to dip so that you can see the curb on the opposite side. I'm not sure why they can't program the mirrror on the driver side to do the same thing. That feature helps me a lot when parking next to a curb. I don't need no stinkin' cameras. Just a mirror that dips. Cheap technology.

My wife's Volvo XC60 can dip both mirrors. I found dipping the left one strangely disconcerting, so I have my profile set to dip just the right one, as in a BMW.

I think you're correct. The hapless BMW staffer that I saw munge up a 335i's sport AT was unbelted. She was maneuvering the car in a parking lot.

Does anyone actually know what happens to make the car stop?

From the sound of it, the AT sets its parking prawl. Something you don't want to do while the car is in motion.

I highly doubt BMW would do anything that would harm the car. Just as people thought ASS would damage the engine, I doubt BMW would stop the car using the gearbox if it damaged it. Do you know for a fact it's the gearbox and not a combination of breaks and gearbox? If it is the gearbox then it must be more than capable of stopping it during this situation repeatedly, otherwise BMW wouldn't do it.

It's a safety feature, I doubt it is meant for repeated use.

Yeah, It also jumps into park when you open the door, while still in D.

I'm a big fan of BMW, but they do what's good for them -- not for you.

First off, they have this funky shifter -- one unlike any other standard PRNDL. So, they got to thinking, what happens if someone gets out of the car and forgets to push P -- an action UNLIKE ANY OTHER COMMON SHIFTER? The answer? The car rolls, and we get sued.

Let's send the engineers back to their CAD stations and get them to design an interlock.

That was it, the sum total of their concern.

As to the idea of whether or not they would do something the car wouldn't support over time, check out this thread in which I whine that they buried an "update" about ASS wear in the quick start guide. They picked a place they could bury the warning about ASS wear.

wow, interetsing stuff about the ASS system. i suppose they would have to say something along those lines to cover themselves if someone found there was wear. to be honest im not suprised it causes more engine wear. glad im only keeping my car for three years!

Im gonna reviwe this thread and share what happened this morning:
Sat in the car, started it. Door open and no seatbelt, I put it in D and pressed the accelerator. Previously it has just clicked really loud and the car stops, but thats when u just release the brake and its about to start rolling but this time I was giving gas and it did NOT stop the car, it just sounded CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK the 2 meters I managed to drive, til I hit the brakes wondering wtf just got f-ed up. Seriously, is it harmless or does something really get screwed?
