320d or 330d M Sport

Hi all

I currently have a 320d M Sport coupe which is a company car. It is now approaching 3 yrs old so it's time for a replacement. I saw the performance figures & fuel economy for the F30 330d & immediately sought lease quotes which are within budget. The only options ticked are the 19's & pro nav.

I've now started to have second thoughts. Fuel economy is a priority as the cost of fuel is a bug bear for me. I'm currently getting around 56mpg in my e92 on a run & don't want to be too far off this. Am i likely to see 50 mpg plus from the 330d or is there going to be a huge drop in mpg?

Alternatively I'm considering a 320d with the sports auto box, pro nav, 19's, adaptive suspension & HK if there's going to be a big difference in fuel economy. What do you think?

Already decided on EB11. I used to have an e46 Clubsport in Estoril so am pleased they've brought the colour back.

A 320d will be cheaper both in terms of lower BIK and yes better fuel economy

We don't know the real world economy of the new 330d. I imagine a large part of the increase in mpg stats is stop/start being introduced.

My efficient dynamics 330d can get 47- 50mpg in a run if I take it real steady and gentle, overall it gets about 39mpg. If you go in town or touch the loud pedal it's a lot less

I've got the 320d with the 8 speed auto box. I would recommend it for the fuel economy, I'm getting 50+mpg and that's with normal/sporty driving and not using the auto stop/start.

I would say the auto would more than make up for the very slight drop in performance from the 330d. The 320d engine is great and is more than fast enough for real world driving, with plenty of mid range power.

It's a good problem to have to choose!!

It entirely depends what you're used to.

I test drove the 320D and the 335i and they both felt hellishly underpowered. The 330D was the only option with enough torque to make real-world driving seem punchy

It all really depends on your needs I suppose, if, as you suggest fuel economy is the all, then the 320d is the model for you. However, the smoothness of the 330d, together with it's power makes all the difference to me. I'm waiting delivery of a 330d M Sport, and currently drive a V6 diesel E Class. I test drove a 320d Sport some months ago, and after the power delivery of a 6, found it somewhat lacking in power, and certainly in refinement. Sorry, but you cannot have a refined 4 cylinder diesel.

Hopefully delivery of the 30d's will start soon so we have some sort of review.

I have an e92 320d at the moment & whilst performance is brisk, I sometimes wish there was more. The fuel econony of the 30d looks impressive on paper but I'm just a bit concerned about mpg with real world driving. The claimed mpg for my 20d is supposed to be around 68mpg on a run however I can only manage 55/56.

If I thought I could get 50+ in the 30d then it would be an easy decision. There's also the temptation of having more performance as opposed to choosing another 3 with the same engine as what I currently have. I just don't want to opt for one & then find out I can only manage early 40's.

I think 44MPG would be a good average for this new 330D engine. With 50MPG on long light footed runs.

I'm currently averaging about 38mpg out of my C250 (2.2l 204 BHP). So as long as my on order 330D hits 38 or higher ... win win.

I get about 34.4mpg on my 12 mile town commute. Longer journeys are easily 45+. Is my car broke?

Ps no heavy right foot in fact I use cruise where I can !

Main problem with he 30d is the time it takes to reach operating temp (a lot more metal to heat up). The 20d is much better for shorter town commutes, say like yours...

My X3 35D M Sport takes 6 miles to hit full temp, so not too bad.

How do you know? Do BMWs show oil temp? ... or are you talking about coolant temp? Because that's not engine temp Usually takes around 15 minutes to warm through a large diesel lump and get all the oils up to full operating temperature.

That's excellent news Most cars have a coolant temp guage on the dash. I guess I learned yet more cool stuff about his car

Funnily using cruise has been proven to use MORE Fuel than not using it. Numerous tests have been done on this.

My wife's KIA RIO 1.4D 3 on a run to coventry with cruise on as much as possible (brim to brim) returned 62MPG, the same run NOT using it returned 68MPG (brim to brim), so she has proved this in her little car. Motorway speeds were possible not 56MPH.

That depends on the driver. A driver who is conciously trying to save fuel will always use less fuel than a computer which is trying only to maintain a constant speed. A driver who is "just driving" probably won't

One of the big differences is on hills. A human will naturally tend to let their speed creeep up going down hill, getting "free" speed and then let it slowly bleed off going up a hill whereas a computer will back off the throttle going down the hill then bury it going back up, using more fuel.

On flat roads, it's likely the computer will beat the human

Totally agree, and a sensitive foot also helps save the fuel. I've experimented with cruise control on the M74, through the hilly border country, so much easier to get best results with cruise off, while still maintaining the same average speed.
