The M3 is a kick butt car, but in my case i had to consider my wife and kids as part of the equation. I almost pulled the trigger on a beauty of an M3 sedan all black but the things not exactly practical for a family guys daily driver. Fuel economy, comfort and my wife will be using it when she's working and i have the kids (i swap to the Suburban when I"m home so i can get the 4 kids around). So I picked a car that i felt had the best performance, comfort, economy and scalability BMW offered. The 335i m sport. Plus, I get to personalize it a bit with performance part. In my case, exhaust, brakes and PPK. Throw in color matched reflectors and a tint and I'll be happy to drive this car for the next 10 years.

I'd have bought the 335i if I could afford it, but I'll be happy with the 328i. Around here, you're paying substantially more for the I6 over the 2-litre for comparably-equipped cars (xDrive).

Both are good engines. The MPG difference is negligible, but the power difference is apparent.

As is the sound...

Very nice engine, but I couldn't justify the expense for myself.

For those want not just a Bimmer but a proper Bimmer - the straight 6. Me for one -

The 335 was ideal for me. A good compromise between a two door couple and 4 door practicality. 328 is great but it can't make up for the power gap. 335 can be as sedate as you want until you decide to crank it up. That's the reason for me to get the 335.

With a relatively cheap tune the 328i could put out the same numbers as a stock 335i so unless the dual exhaust look is the deal breaker for you a 328i can be just as fast.

Now if you want it to sound good you'll need exhaust and downpipes but that would also still be cheaper than buying a 335i.

If you're price conscious then the 328i is for you if you want the mid level 3 series then go with the 335i. All comes down to preference.

I get the enthusiast thing everyone says on here but in los angeles there are a lot of rich asian girls that drive 335s lol. Its not always the "enthusiast" option.

How many of us "enthusiasts" on here see track time? To me, if you arent getting out there and pushing the car to your limits on a closed track, that is not an enthusiast in my book. You can have a porsche gt3 and drive it on the freeway fast. That makes you a ricer not an enthusiast LOL.

Yeah, 'cause you can't possibly be an enthusiast if you don't thrash the pants of your car on a track. Yeah.

Audi's 4 cylinder outsold their 6 cylinder for the A4 by such a large margin, they eventually stopped selling their 6 cylinder version in the USA. But their 6 cylinder was never the monster that BMW's N55 is, so that was part of the reason.

But to answer your question, some people just like a 6 cylinder. I'm in that camp. I drive fast on the highway. At fast highway speeds, there's nothing like having a smooth powerful 6 cylinder for passing the idiot in front of you that doesn't move over.

Yep. So one becomes an enthusiast just because he/she bought a 335 vs a 328? Youre kidding right? Drive the damn thing if your an enthusiast. No excuses. The car aint worth a shit if you dont/cant drive it.

First off, I urge anyone who frequents a forum like this to join the BMW CCA and go to a spring or fall performance driving school. Then you can begin to push your car to its limits in a safe and controlled environment.

Personally, I took my E90 328i to High Plains Raceway outside of Denver and, while I pushed that car as hard as it could go, I was getting crushed by 335's as well as M3's and M5's. I cannot WAIT to get my new 335 xdrive out there.

I think anyone who comes on these forums can be considered an enthusiast, but there will always be superficial rich assholes who buy a 335 over a 328 because it is a "higher number" and therefor better. Ignore these people...they give the rest of us a bad image.

Back to the main topic. Here in Colorado, I believe there are many people who either get an M3 or consider it strongly, only to eventually come back to the 335. It is the best of both worlds. It is more fuel efficient than the M3 by far and is available in xdrive so it can be a daily driver all year long. It also still offers considerable power over the 328.

In this sense, I am the perfect target demographic and I couldn't be happier!

Are you on drugs or trolling or do you just think yourself superior because you drive your car on a track?

Get your pathetic straw-man, put it back in its little box and come back to the real world where the rest of us live.

If you get a tune for your 328i you'll void the warranty. If you get the PPK tune for 335i you won't. There's a reason for that, the much higher operating pressure in the 328i.

I say enjoy the cars for what they are. 328i is faster in the twisties, 335i is faster in the straight aways, M3 is faster than both at both.

The difference will be clearer when they put more power in the 335 next year...

I have a watch that is shiny and talk shit to ppl with a cheaper watch. Does that make me a watch enthusiast or even close to it? I dont think myself superior to anyone else. Never said that nor will i ever feel, say or think that.

My message wasnt directed towards you yet you are getting head over heels about it. Stop whining and put your man pants back on. If you like your shiny car and consider yourself an enthusiast because of it more power to you.

But there are those with much lesser cars than all of us here that are just as much if not more of an enthusiast than you or myself. The price of your car has nothing to do with it. I love cars but i LOVE driving them. So maybe im confused here.
And Im speaking in general, the strange thought on these forums of 328 = not enthusiast, 335 = enthusiast. That is just laughable.

Oh and maybe, take it out once? Its really fun and youll want to go out every single time.

That wasn't my objection. My objection was your assertion that people cannot be an enthusiast unless they track their cars.

What gives you the right to determine what does and doesn't qualify as an enthusiast?

The 335i made a better noise and made me feel a special tingling sensation in my pants that the 328i did not.

The tingling sensation was worth the extra money to me.

I see your point - I should have quoted the 335/328 enthusiast vs non enthusiast comment.

But in honesty it is fun to drive any bmw on a closed track. If you were in my area i would bug the hell out of you to come out and represent for the f30s! The perception of the performance of any of these cars based on driving in the city is quickly washed away after one session.

Matter of fact im gonna check out where youre from to see if i should bug the hell out of you or not later - Im on the lame bpost app right now.
