Quieter: 328i or 335i? Lines?

I'm pretty sensitive to road, wind, and engine noise when I drive. I've read that some think that the no line base car is noisier than any of the Lines. Have you found this to be true?

I also found a thread someplace about how CAR & DRIVER magazine measured interior noise levels and found the 335i to be noticeably noisier than the 328i. Is it?

Speculation is that the 335 is a slightly noisier car because of the healthy engine sound. I want the quietest car possible, but I might make an exception for the way that engine sounds..........

There's no difference between the lines. Some THINK the no line is noisier cause they need a subconscious justification to dump more money on a line. Outside of the steering/suspension on the msport and sport, all the lines do is add some external trim and some interior color options.

As for noise, there's been some complaints about wind noise due to the front windshield not being glued properly, or some rattling/buzzing due to HUD, but again, test drive a few and feel for yourself. The 3 series isn't designed to be a quiet highway cruiser.

If you want the quietest car possible, go get an activehybrid, or even a 5 series (550 is actually quieter than 528/535, since bigger engine means it needs less revs/power to reach same speeds)

Tsuyoi is right and i would have to agree with him...

Lines or no lines, there is no difference in terms of quietness..

hAVING THE 335i, i can tell you that the engine sound with the hood open on the 6 cyl DOES NOT sound as sweet as on previous 6cyl 3 series.
Both current F30 N20 and N55 sound terrible claking and rattling due to the turbo affixed.

eXHAUSt-wise, the 328i would be less melodious than the 335i.
The 335i is bordeline hooligan with its exhaust, (although not as much as the G35/37)

If you want the quietest car possible, you should consider Lexus or the 7 series...

3 series is not well insulated at all compared to the competition...

BMW's are known for a lot of things, but a refined, quiet ride is not one of those things.

Although, I must say my 2011 7 series is the most quietest BMW I have ever driven.

If your ears are sensitive, go with a Lexus. BMW is not refined in that area!

The current 5er is pretty quiet; too quiet for some purists. A certain amount of road noise is caused by run-flat tires, and a quieter ride can be had by replacing these with non-RFTs. Taller, narrower tires are better for noise, too -- but not for handling, except maybe in snow. As for engine sound, the sad fact is that a turbocharged motor is never going to have the pleasing mechanical and exhaust sound of the old naturally aspirated sixes. And they're gone, except for what's left of the current E92 - E93 production.

wow, i'm amazed at the complaints about noise. my 328i is a little noisy when you first start it up and its cold. like just barely.

but this car is way quieter than my last car (which did the same thing when cold, because of direct injection). i had a 2010 A4 before so it wasnt like it was ancient. this car is so quiet and so fast, i was doing 100 on the freeway yesterday and didnt even know it. if it were quieter not sure what i'd do, maybe i'm just deaf.

Agreed that it's quieter than a lot of cars. But one only has to drive a Lexus to know how quiet a car cabin can be. A Lexus is like a rolling sound recoding booth.

The most annoying sound in the N55 F30 is that turbo woosh. It's pretty damn loud.

I agree the 3-series is not built for quiet. A friends 7 is amazing in that department. I prefer the loud exhaust note possible in the 335i. Overall have not noticed much difference from the E90 to the F30 by way of "noise" outside of the exhaust.

that is because your 7 is the quietest car in it's segment at highway speeds especially.

I did not realize sport or msport have different steering from the base? Is that so?

Steering system is the same. Steering wheels may be different but that's not a functional difference.

Well, my F30 330d M Sport is just amazing. I did some incredible speeds today, no road or wind noise at all and the ride was sublime. The acceleration just blew my mind. Then I got into my Golf Mk6 GTI and it felt like a Nissan Micra!

If quiet is what you after, maybe you should consider 5 series.
My F10 5 Series cabin is so quiet, I almost fall asleep every time I drive the car.
People are calling this gen 5 series a Lincoln lol.
The F30 3 series are almost priced the same as 5 anyway. ($40k for 328/528, $50k for 335/535)

Wut? 328i starts at 37k msrp. 528 at 47k. That's a 10k gap. Or a 25% price gap. You could get premium, tech, cold weather, and HK audio on a 3 series for a base 5.
