12Volt power supply

Anyone know if there is a 12V power take-off in the rear view mirror housing?.
I was thinking of mounting a camera their.

Yes there is John, I too am connecting my camera to it. There's a thread in the DIY about it I think!

There is, take a look in the DIY section.

What cameras are you guys mounting? I've been thinking of getting one to record any possible incidents.

I've got one of these: http://www.finevu.net/cr300hdfeature.htm

Bought it from HK when it was initially out, but I think there is now a distributor in the UK.

It's pretty good, the main reason I like it is it's so small, and fits behind the rear view mirror (pretty much invisible from the driver's seat). The resolution is technically 1080p, though the sensor etc. is relatively low quality, so the detail isn't all that good, but it should at least help in the case of any disputes. Starts and stops recording with the ignition, and uses a Micro SD card to record onto (loops over). Pretty good IMO

Thanks guys, I'll take a look. After someone reversed into me last October and it was impossible to prove I was stationary, I've been thinking of getting one. I don't want to spend too much but do want it to be small and discrete.

Mark I have looked at the pictures of what I found on DIY it's not very clear on how to remove the mirror housing, the wiring is clear enough, did you or have you gone down this route if so how easy was it to remove/split the housing .

I'm thinking of getting one too. I would want a GPS equipped camera though so speed is displayed.

Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Bl...item416da7f638

Sorry mate, I'm just waiting for my lead to arrive (Invisicord jobby) from the US, then the dealer is doing it, so I'm not sure about the housing. I've read it can be quite tricky though, more difficult than you'd think; so it might be worth asking your service dept. for some tips to avoid breaking anything?!

I'd never thought of doing this, but will look into it now. I live in fear of being hit by one of the growing number of idiots who drive with less than 5% or their attention on the road (or on the phone).

Is the evidence from one of these admissible in court?

Technically yes it is admissible; though if e.g. the court decides the quality isn't high enough for it to be fully conclusive or useful, it could be rejected. On mine, even though it's 1080p, the bitrate isn't all that good, so in certain driving conditions, lighting conditions, weather, speeds etc., it's not possible to see the numberplate of the other cars.

But, the way I see it is that it's at least a chance to look out for yourself; and it will show the other car, and perhaps even the driver, involved in the incident. So either they will hopefully back down when shown the evidence, or - even though the plate may not be fully visible - at least you have the car, and evidence of exactly what happened, and perhaps being able to trace witnesses. Also the other car may be damaged, so you could track that back to where it was repaired etc. - or if not repaired, the damage will tie up with the video - so it would still be difficult for them to say it wasn't them. Definitely a good chance it could help you!

Insurance companies often have deals with each other, and targets etc., relating to accepting responsibility for 'fault claims' etc. (as we found out a couple of years ago), and a lot will just accept responsibility (on your behalf!) so as to avoid the financial implications, and time, involved in fighting the claim and court etc. So this evidence could very well just encourage your insurance company to at least just do their job and look after you!
