F30 Wind-Noise Issues

Just like many other users complained about wind-noise, I went from E90 to F30 and noticed excessive wind noise in the cabin above 50 mph. This is noticeable on both Driver and Passenger side.

You would hear this noise if you pay a little attention without Steroe on.

I took it to my dealer and the shop foreman told me that there is no defect in the car and its likely to be from the size of the side mirrors. Although I can't agree with that, I have to say it is possible, specially in combination with aerodynamics (Shape of the mirror and position etc.) At any rate, it seems like a design flaw.

He also mentioned that earlier production had a problem with a window seal, but that is resolved.

My car is a 335 Msport, Sep production from Germany. To prove/disprove the shop foreman, I test drove one 335 and one 328 from two different dealers and they also had this issue.

I have read on other threads that there has been attempts to repair this issue by other dealers, which seems to not have fixed a issue. Hence, I advise against this action if you notice this issue, unless the issue is beyond normal for F30.

As a final attempt, I reached out to BMW NA, and the rep said they will relay this to manufacturer, and if there are enough complaints about it, they might attempt to fix and retrofit.

So do your part, and reach out to BMW if you care about this issue.

Thank you,

My car has the same issue. I took it to the dealer last Saturday, and had a tech drove my car around, and they admit there is a wind noise going on during 50mph+. Scheduled an appointment for next week, and I will see how it goes.

It is interesting that they are taking an action. Be very careful as what they are going to do. I have driven 4 f30s 335s and 328s and they all have it. Some people say they dont have it simple because they are not sensitive to the noise. My conclusion is that the mirrors direct the air towards the windows and creates the wind noise. My dealer did test with high pressure water in my car and there was no leaks any where

The issue has been confirmed in my case. BMW service is going to fix it for me by this Saturday. I will let you know the results.

I have a 320i in China, and I also found this issue, does it sound like whistle when the speed goes up to 80 km/h (50mph).

Oh boy... Here we go again. Lol
My advice people? Don't even bother with this issue. I wish I had never taken my car to the dealer and here is why:

Same issue here

I have the 320d F30 in South Africa. We have a plant here at Rosslyn - but I also experience the exact same problems with wind noise. At speeds above 90 kph, a whistling noise enters the cabin from all the doors, mainly the front ones. So I think it's a design issue rather than an assembly issue, since this seems to happen all over the world.

I've had mine back to several dealers multiple times - next week it's going in for the 5th time in 4 months

So far they've done the following, with no difference to the noise levels:
  • Refitted Windshield
  • Replaced all the door seal rubbers
  • Realigned all the doors (and in the process messed up the one to the extend that it needs to be slammed extremely hard to close)

The tech from BMW also said it is because of the side mirrors' design not allowing air to flow off of it, but rather routing it over the windows, causing more wind noise. What a pity. BMW should seriously recall this issue - it's not very German like...

I don't have a whistle, or noise that bothers me in any way. But there are two things that stick out for me when it comes to this problem...

* There is a noticeable space between door panel and B pillar where I can see door/paint.

* The door doesn't look like it sits exactly flush with the B pillar when closed. It doesn't look bad or off by a lot, but if you look in a side mirror you can notice it.

If the noise is due to seams in the car body such as bad seals or a seam between the door and pillar, it's easy to test for. Just use painter's tape and cover up the seams to negate their impact and drive away.

I have no doubt that your car has significant wind noise. However, if it is due to the design of the mirrors, there is really nothing BMW can do about it at this point besides changing the design for future models. What can they do at this point? Rip off the mirrors from the body? It definitely sounds like there may be a design flaw, but it in no way is a safety issue, which is the primary reason that a recall is issued. My advice is to leave it alone and turn the music up a little louder.

My stepfather also complained about wind noise on the passenger side, but I am unable to hear anything myself. Other people also are unable to hear anything. Maybe only people with exceptionally good hearing can hear it?

No here we are not going there again The point of the thread is exactly making people aware that there is DESIGN FLAW NOT A DEFECT

You can call BMW and raise your concern, so they f'ing fix it with a retro or at least fix it in future.

I have zero wind noise as well.

As other have mentioned, if you feel this is a problem warranting attention get your facts in order. Pinpoint specifically where the noise is coming from and at what speed. BMW tends to be very strict on what corrections dealers can perform.

BMW has a PUMA database and I would ask your service team to research any other vehicles having the same problem and the prescribed correction from corporate.

It took BMW six months to correct a part defect in a product I own and I learned the hard way that BMW follows a strict problem remediation process.
