No, that's not what I'm saying. I have a 2013 328i 6MT (RWD), and it most definitely has a plastic oil pan (and plastic plug).

Oil change

I also did an oil change on a 328i 07
Oil capacity is closer to 6.3 quarts.
Hold on to your wallet when its time to service the transmission if its an automatic. An independent BMW shop wanted $ 800. I You-Tubed and Bimmerfested the procedure and DIY for about $200.
BMW used to say lifetime Trans fluid but really who believes that.

the oil from the engine was REALLY dirty. Way too dirty/black for me to have it in the car for another 11k miles, the 1st oil change the BMW has scheduled for the car. Also, I found very small chunks of metal bottom of the oil drain pan which I clearly cleaned before doing the engine oil change. This clearly is not good for the engine in long run.

Many people who lease the car prob wont give a $hit, but I just wanted to inform those of who wants to keep the car for many years to come.

jclass, i think 07 328i had a 3.0L I6 engine... F30 328i has 2.0L I4

Mobil 1

On my 2007 3 series...my 'independent' mechanic said that the Mobil 1 does not meet all the criteria for BMW engines. It is a suitable substitute when the prescribed oils are not available.

His price for BMW oil (in bulk) was only modestly higher than Mobil 1.

On a new car...under warranty...he suggested contacting BMW as to warranty issues in using Mobil 1 continuously. I have yet to do that. (I have an F30 on order).

The whole debate on oil brands and specs...really came to light this summer at the BMW National Motorad (motorcycle) Rally. A very good oil seminar showed the differences between synthetics...and why some would be recommended, and others not for BMW motorcycle engines.

Although the topic here is BMW autos...this seminar gave added reason to heed my mechanic's comments.

My BMW oil filter came with replacement o-rings, but not a replacement plug itself. I just reused the plastic plug (with a new o-ring), I didn't see any reason it couldn't be reused. I guess next time I'll ask for the kit that includes a replacement plug.

Yes..you should use what BMW suggests. If you ever have a warranty issue...I would not tell them of your interim oil changes using Mobil One.

Actually...the 2007 328i (a 6 cylinder) takes nearly 7 quarts of oil when you change the filter.

Any clue as to the thread type on the drain plug? After factory service is over with I think this would make oil changes just that much easier.

I had something like this for my GLI...it was nice an prevented oil from going everywhere. Those of us with plastic oil pans are probably out of luck though.

If you read the BMW bulletin carefully...it says first.... if you need to top off the oil....and BMW oil is not available...the listed (non-BMW) oils will suffice....the EURO FORMULA MOBIL 1 IS NOT ON THE LIST. The US version is.

I used Amsoil 5w40, which does meet LL01 spec and is pretty common. Mobil 1 has been falling out of favor lately, and my last oil analysis w/Blackstone with Mobil 1 0w40 a few years back wasn't the best. I switched to 5w40 Amsoil in my old 99 Saab 9-3 Viggen and was impressed, so given that it meets BMW's spec I'll continue to use it here.

By default, the Mobil-1 0W-40 in the US is called the "European Car Formula". It's not the same as Pennzoil making two versions of Platinum; one being the "regular" formula and the other being the "Euro" formula.

The bottle clearly states that the 0W-40 is BMW LL-01 approved.

As for why I didn't get the BMW branded oil for my between interval oil change, it's two things:

1.) Availability. I can walk into literally any Wal-Mart in PHX and buy the stuff rather than have to make a special trip to the dealer to pick it up.

2.) Principle. I don't want to have to pay a $1-2 premium for re-branded Castrol

Could be worse... my Porsche required 9 Quarts of high end synthetic and you had to replace the drain plug each time. Dealers charged $300 for an oil change!

I usually did it myself but even that sucked.. ~$80 for oil, $20 for drain plug, $30 for filter.

The drain plug was light weight aluminum and was easily stripped, that's why they advised to replace each time. I am not sure if BMW's are the same, but for those doing it yourselves.. you may want to buy an extra one to have around just in case.
