With the ever more stringent economy rules, anything you can do to improve the vehicle's efficiency is getting added. Some hate the start/stop feature, obviously, some hate the fender vent. The rear spoiler adds mechanical complexity and cost, but should actually increase efficiency as well as function. This all goes into the overall scheme of things...it doesn't do you any good to 'hate' it...it will become much more common as things progress, and you'll not notice it as much since everyone will have one.

Personally, I look more at how a vehicle drives and functions than what it looks like...I can't see the outside when I'm using it and it's hard to get a good view when it's in the garage! I really don't care what other people think. If you're that uptight about how it looks, at least BMW gives you choices...nobody is putting a gun to your head and saying you HAVE to buy it!

I think at best that may only be the case for a small percentage. Who knows really? The X4 doesn't exist. If you want a high entry luxury sport activity vehicle, the X1 falls off the list for materials and entry height.... the tourer is not an option. That leaves only the X3 and 3GT. If you want an SUV, there are others. But for high entry 5 door luxury sport activity vehicles, BMW has the field to itself. Excluding the Honda Crosstour as a non-luxury car.

BMW is hot on driving dynamics. The vent is part of that. Get used to it. Ditto the active spoiler. Release is pretty consistent;y mentioned as July:

LCIs are in the 4th year so what's to do? The 3GT is an improvement on the Tourer. More cargo and human space. Auto Express says it has more legroom than a 5-series sedan. Apparently it has the new Navi etc. Subsequent 3 series revisions will all no doubt benefit. If BMW decides there's enough people for a Touring, it would be no surprise if the next version picks up much of the GT features. Especially that killer vent.

The 3 tourer is not available for that long ... i would say middle of last year only.

I find it interesting that they try to emphasize dynamics (including liberal use of ///M badges) for a car that is mostly appealing to women and older consumers who care more about comfort and legroom.

The first time my wife saw an M sport car, an E92 328 xDrive loaner, she asked "why does it have M badges everywhere? It's not an M. That's stupid." We might buy one of these but it won't be an M sport <3

IMHO, 5GT despite compromised looks drove way better than any, 5, 6 or 7 out there.
I hope 3GT keeps the spirit.
I might consider it over 6 grand coupe

What qualifies you to make this statement as if it were fact when it's just your opinion, something you pulled out of your ........ ? How do you know what they care about?

Compared to you perhaps, they are better described, I think, as people who don't need to pretend they drive a race car yet enjoy and appreciate fine German engineering and the graceful way a car takes that residential 80 degree turn as well as the thrill of popping into the HOV all in a civil digital cockpit where they can find the nearest Starbucks via 3D Google maps, by voice. Did I mention being able to change the suspension at the touch of a button for all their driving? Much more sophisticated drivers than little one trick ponies tearing up the neighborhood I think.

They also emphasize the practicality and comfort of it for the same customers.

Though I'd love to see where you get your 3 series GT key demographic information? Unless it's an off hand generalisation based on stereotypes.

My demographics come from sales observations from senior BMW sales associates in relationship to GT 5-Series sales which had a tough time getting going as BMW worked out the branding of that model.

Don't get me wrong, this observation is not a dig against it the 3 Series GT. I think it looks good and would be nice... for my wife. Rest assured, however, she would not give a darn about a retractable spoiler!

I love it, and it will be the car to get me back in a BMW.

I loved my E39s and E46s, they got the handling bang on for every day cars, but my 535d and 335i were just too crashy, on anything but the smoothest of of roads they were horrible and did't even handle that well either.
My M3 CSL was far more comfy than my 335i, somthing there is not right.

The 5GT is a 7 series hatch, and it works, it is the best all round BMW made at the moment, but understand it is not to everyones tastes looks wise. We bought an F11 touring and didn't like it, lasted 10 weeks and was swapped, in the end for a 5GT.
Even I only like them in Black.

I would never buy a saloon (sedan) I simply don't like the image, to me it shouts company car driver, middle aged man.
Hatchback is first car, coupe is good looking no cares in the world car, estate (wagon) is young and sporty (thinking snowboards, bikes, surfboards etc.) and sedan is "the boss said I can have a BMW but it can only be a saloon as they are a safe image and cheaper."

The 3 GT will be like a sportier 5 series touring but will hopefully not be such a crashy ride compared with BMWs of recent years, it may allow you to push on properly, something that has been missing for the last 8 years or so.

Can't wait to test one of these.

That's very interesting. I sincerely wish we had those perceptions driving our market in the US. Over here, it's:
  • A hatchback is your first car...but it's an old first car because nobody sells them here anymore.
  • A coupe is good looking no cares in the world car (same).
  • A wagon is a...what is a wagon, you mean one of those wood sided things my mom drove in 1973? No thanks, I'll drive an SUV instead.
  • A sedan is a car.
I live in Colorado where we really do carry around all that stuff you mention, so I love wagons. I'm pissed that we don't have an M3 wagon over here, I'd certainly be driving one. Or at least a 335i xDrive.

Actually, the F10 M-Sport in saloon guise is a very nice looking car, first time I have preferred the saloon over the touring.

I am not that keen on the F11 or the F31, where as I loved my E46 tourings and my E91 tourings.

My old tourings...

And dare I post this??

Not me loading up a 5GT to take my daughter to Uni!

It is my old mans.
He had a 7 series and sold it for the new 5 series, but found it far to bland, so after trying a new 7 series, X5, X6 and an S Class and A8 he ended up deciding on the new 7 series, then the sales guy got him to try the GT, slightly more focused than the 7 series, and at a year old it was 50% cheaper too.
So he went for it. Had it two and half years now and he loves it, and I have to say so do I, even the looks have grown on me, a bit like a mother always thinks her child is beautiful, even when everyone around is cringing as they have to kiss it at birthdays and holidays!!

But, the 5GT is huge inside, I took that instead of my Merc E350cdi estate as I could get more in the GT.

Cant wait to see it! 330xd with the m-performance upgrade would be perfect. I will guess the 0-100 would be around 5sec.
