F30 320i - N20 Tuning

Merry Christmas Everyone ...

Wonder what's the best available tuning for the Twin-power N20 320i (184hp) that can be Connected/Disconnected easily to avoid warranty issues during service.

Most threads are talking 328i ... Would like also to know how much power the Kit will provide.

German Engineering company, seems to be one of the most reliable tunes for the 320i on the market.

The JB N20 Stage1 tuning is compatible. Get the USB cable with it as they have 320 specific settings you load after installing.

What horsepower and torque figures one could could expect from the 320i with the JB N20 Stage 1 tune?

Would you know if there are any benefits or downsides of using the 98 or 99 (RON) octane gasoline we normally use where I come from with the JB tune?

Thanks!

BMW recommend 95RON fuel but all official BMW performance data comes from using 98RON. Been using 98RON for as long as Shell had it available. (Years ago it was called Optimax & currently V-Power) Extra kms driven compared to lower RON fuel.

Cleaner burning as far as manufacturers' claims go.

My dealer started me off with a tankful of 95RON in my F30. I then put 98RON after using the first tank. I could feel a distinct performance improvement from the 98RON. Will ALWAYS use 98RON in my F30.

98RON recommended.

The Highest RON we have here (Egypt) is 95RON ; Sure I won't be able to get all the power out of it !!

Still performance is great and acceleration is far better than my old E90 - 320i the N20 is an amazing piece IMO

Thanks guys for all the good information ; Plz keep updating if there's higher outputs tuning kits

Since it is the same motor in the 320i as the 328i, only detuned, would it be possible to bring it up to the levels of a tuned 328i?

Or are the Intercooler and other bits not the same?

Pistons are different. So it will not match the capabilities of the 328.

There was some extensive discussion about it in this thread.

Basically the 320i can't be brought up to the same figures as the 328i that easily as there are quite a few differences, i.e. compression ratio (11 vs. 10), different pistons, different backpipe (60,2mm vs. 75mm), software and maybe some other things people are not sure.

Normally tuning companies quote about 220-230 horsepowers and ~325Nm what can be achieved with the 320i (with external units).

Still amazes me how low-life's want to tune their cars engine and if something goes wrong (with the engine) expect the factory to pick up the tab. Grow a pair and be a man.

So, returning to jcastle's first question, have there been any actual results posted from the JB N20 Stage1 tuning chip installed on a 320i?

There has been quite a number of dyno results and discussions for 328i installs, but haven't seen anything for 320i. Are the numbers jcastle posted in his subsequent post accurate?

Cut n paste from forum:

BMW has just announced a new entry level F30 3 series, the 320i. The 320i shares the same N20; TwinPower single turbo, twin scroll, 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder engine as the 328i. The 320i is factory rated at 180 hp at 5,000 RPMs and 200 lb-ft of torque from 1,250 RPMs. Stacked next to the 328i with 240hp at 5000 RPMs and 255 lb-ft of torque from 1250 RPMs and the obvious question is what is the difference in the two engines.

The first obvious answer is there is something in BMW's DME control software that limits the power, most likely by limiting boost pressure, on the 320i. That appears to be true as both the 320 and the 328 use the same DME hardware (PN - 12148604210) and the same engine control system MEVD 17.2.9. With a software tweak the likely difference between the 320i and the 328i we go in search of other changes that might limit the 320is ability to make the same power the 328i N20 puts down.

The next easy target is the intake, exhaust manifold and turbo. Surprisingly they turned out to be the same part number. In fact the 320i and the 328i share the exact same part numbers for a majority of the engine components.

Shared engine components between F30 320i and 328i

Hi, Iīm new at this Forum. I just bought the BMS Stage 1 for my BMW 320i. At first there was no change, the car was doing the same 7.2 second 0 to 60 from the factory.
But it seems that after 100 kms, the carīs computer finally adopt the new values and I could reach 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds (full tank). The torque is notorious once the car takes 3rth gear reaching very fast to 100kms/h (or 60mph). I want to be sure that this isnīt a fake psychological feeling and that the Stage 1 did the 6.6 seconds. But, i was wondering if disconnecting car battery iīm going to ensure that the computer is getting the values from the BMS Stage 1?

I guess 6.6 seconds in a factory 320i with full fuel tank itīs impossible, and the only responsable for that is the BMS Stage 1. I Have a video.

Does anyone know how to disconect the battery?
Regards,

that explains the skew in your timing. Your reaction time and/or enthusiasm easily account for the 1s difference. If an accurate timing to measure ur mods is what your really after invest in a performance meter like Gtech Pro SS or VBox performance box. All those stopwatches or smartphone apps just dont cut it with a sub 10s measurement the margin of error is too great
