ED Reservation Confirmed! - Pics added 6/20

Hello,

Just wanted to share that my ED order is now in and reservation confirmed.

I did a ton of research here and there are some great people on this forum. I've been a member of one BMW forum or another since 2001 or earlier but am new here.

Ordered a Mineral Grey 320i ZSP sport package. Black SensaTec, Fineline Anthracite wood trim, LED lighting package, Navigation, heated front seats and split folding rear.

Used a midwest dealer who has been very straightforward from the first call. So far, so good. I will report back when transaction is fully complete.

I am very excited about my value sport commuter Price for sport, design, quality and features is fantastic. I hope to keep this one for a long time. Wish me luck.

That's just me. You may have sat in it for hours and loved it.

Thanks for the thought. I had leatherette on 2 previous cars and didn't have any issue. Had black Dakota leather on my last one, and really, I liked the vinyl better. Looked better over time, and since I hope to keep this one a long time, figured the sensatec will hold up better. I would love the saddle brown leather, but since I can't beg, borrow or steal it onto a 320, it isn't worth 8k to bump to a 328 for it.

I would love cloth, but never allowed in the US.

Great. Looking forward to seeing photos. I've got a very similar build with ED a few weeks earlier.

A9 north from Munich to Nuremberg is also a great stretch of Autobahn with rolling hills.

Great News P!
So production will start After May 15th, roughly 2 weeks before delivery once the week 21 is over... That seems about right... It usually take that long to Let the paint dry properly

By the way, i think your choice is awesome and very sensible!
(I read your rational in Furly thread.)

I had a used 1996 328i E36 before my F30 and i thought that was plenty of power.
Your 320i build is practically the same as my E36, down to the color.

I would totally order the same so i can get its spiritual successor..

Its gonna go by fast...

You hit the nail on the head. This really is the successor to my 1st BMW.

It was Steel Gray. Optioned almost exactly the same as this one except the trim color, a couple new tech stuff and I can't get the HK audio. Only real shortcoming is the turbo 4 over the non turbo straight six, but those days are long gone. I had the turbo six in my 135i, and I prefer the normally aspirated from my 02 and 05. Plus I really enjoyed working on that engine.

I hadn't really considered a new BMW since my last new one was a bit of a disappointment, but I was planning this trip to Europe and my brother was teasing me that I was just going to get another BMW. By chance my 550i was approaching the keep or dump mileage of 100k, so I peeked at the build your own and stumbled on the 320i with the ZSP. Hadn't been keeping tabs, so didn't know of the new model or that the basic sport package of old was back. M sport pkg with all the appearance stuff but no fixed sport suspension seemed to be the new way. And when they had the sport, lux and modern lines it was impossible to option a car the way I wanted it and the prices were higher with many compromises.

I liked the front design of the F30 when it first came out, but last time I optioned a 3 series the value seemed pretty bad to me, so this was very nice surprise. Plus the smoother rear bumper on the LCI caught my eye on the road. Seems like minor stuff, maybe it was just the timing. It should really fit the bill to get me past a couple college tuitions.

I did this a year ago, it was fun. I couple tips, call BMW ahead of time they offer a shuttle service but you have to schedule it; it will save you ~60EU of a cab ride.

Plan your trip and don't cram too many activities.
Traffic out of munich sucks(at least it did for me) during morning/afternoon hours
You need to purchase some "required" safety equipment, ~15EU.
Bathrooms in germany are paid, but if you pump gas/buy something then they are free.
Don't speed in the city, there is tons of cameras and they are very well hidden. The cabbie pointed all of them out otherwise they are difficult to see.

Don't watch any YT euro delivery videos, it spoils the fun. Factory tour and museum are really neat.

Whered you get the ED? The guys at elmhurst are great.

Thanks for the feedback.

The shuttle is new. I thought it was strange they didn't offer something the last time.

This will be part of a larger trip, so things are a bit unusual. I've been over there several times, so I'm pretty comfortable at this point.

I bought from DeFouw in Lafayette, IN. Matt Martin and Cesni Ennis have been extremely straight and very helpful from the very beginning.

Funny, I did go to Elmhurst. I test drove the only RWD 320i I could find in Chicago there. The salesman was very nice and helpful, but they were one of many Chicagoland dealers that would not deal off ED MSRP or perhaps 1k under ED MSRP. I can't tell if dealers are unaware of the pricing structure of ED, or think the process is too much trouble to bother with without some extra margin, or just a different business model in the populated areas, although I found a few willing to deal a ED with some effort.

I bought my first 2 ED from Anderson in Crystal lake. They are also very good. I tried again this time, but it just didn't work out as well as DeFouw. If your in the Chicago area and going to order, I would recommend them. Only about 2 hours away, and I've done everything over e-mail or phone so far. Might have to physically go there once or twice at most.

That's weird, AFAIK I got about 9% off MSRP at elmhurst on my ED. I just called and talked to each sales rep at every dealer and got their emails and then had em email me pricing. I told em exactly what I needed and that all i cared about was the price. Elmhurst was the lowest from the get go.

I went to test drive the manual 320i today, and bou am i so delightfully surprised at how much i still enjoyed the car even when it has less than 100hp than my car.

If i were to buy my own Jalopnik Edition 320i, it eould be $45k MSRP !! I dont know if i can justify spending that much for a least powerful 4cyl...

I was torn here too, but I usually option pretty minimally, and when I optioned a 328i the way I would like it, the packages really tack on some stuff I am not interested in. For me the MSRP was 11,600 different between the two, and really, of stuff I really liked, the Saddle leather with Ash trim, M sport front bumper, HK audio, HUD, 400M wheels and higher HP just wasn't worth that kind of money to me, especially for a car that's still a 4 cylinder.

The a la carte method on the 320i vs the 328i just suited me better. Plus I'm not really looking for a rocket for this car, but if I really thought it to be underpowered (although I expect not), I can always add the JB4 tune.

I certainly understand others might see more value in the extras you get or can get with the 328. It would certainly be a more loaded car, but for me, I couldn't get 11,600 more excited about it.

The base price, $1300 ZSP package and $700 LED lighting package available without requiring the Premium package are the three areas that really had a huge $ impact for my build comparison.

As I spent a good deal of time going back and forth, I do understand the benefits of both models.

BTW: The ED MSRP for my order is $38,465 including destination $ handling.

Also, I test drove a 320i RWD non sport, a 320i RWD sport and a 328 RWD Track Handling Package, and of the three, the 320i ZSP was the one that fit the bill for me.

So my CA told me I'm a week 21 build, but as of this morning the phone system still says "scheduled for production with no confirmed production date yet"

I guess something will change next week, as I will need a VIN in the next 11 days.

Today I was informed that the production of all F3X/4X with optional Navigation systems has likely been delayed, due to limited supply of Navi semi-conductor chips. This holdup is related to the recent earthquakes in Japan, when the manufacturing plant that supplies BMW with Navi chips was damaged. As you have been informed, "no confirmed production date yet" for either your car or many others.

Since your car is scheduled for ED, hopefully, it is very high up on the priority list for production.

Bad news. I would think ED has a high priority. Everything has been confirmed. I'll post an update as soon as anything changes.
