Help bmw f31 steering rack knock

Well good evening I don't know what part of the forum to post this on so I'm posting it in a couple of sections I have a bmw f31 2013 touring x drive 320d I have this very annoying clunking noise which has came from no where I herd it when my car engine was off slightly touched the steering wheel clunk and now if you shake the steering wheel it clunks I've jacked the car up checked everything and by the looks and feel of things it's coming from the steering rack and after typing on google a lot of people have said rack replacement is there a recall for the steering rack to get replaced on f31's ? Or how can I go about it as I don't really want to be going and paying like £3000 for the repair or even more considering the rack is £2400 many thanks kev any info would be great thanks

Very similar to what happened with my F31. Very quickly diagnosed by BMW as a steering rack and replaced under warranty. The bill outside of warranty is eye watering. However given the number of steering rack faults you should be well placed to get a goodwill gesture from BMW, especially if you have a full main dealer service history.

I bought my bmw 2nd hand I will need to go check all the service history it's a 2013 so it will only be 3 years so it will be out of warranty don't know what's the best way to go about it all

My 2012 F30 had a new rack under AUC warranty

I'm not sure whether the later models had an improved rack or whether the part is updated when replaced by BMW but from what I found it only seemed common on earlier models.

I reckon it'll be expensive to have fixed without any goodwill - it's things like this that make me think buying / leasing from new and getting rid after 3 years is the way to go - some of the spare parts for these cars are frighteningly expensive

I had ours replaced last September and it goes in for another one at the end of this month. I don’t think the part is different or updated. 2014 car

Went to the dealer told them there was a knock and they said it needed one. They ordered the part and fitted it

Just called in to dealer at a quiet time, one of their techs came out with me and 15 mins later said steering rack was the cause.

It was under AUC warranty and all taken care of at no cost so cant say what the price was.

I'm glad I had a AUC warranty, I'm not convinced other aftermarket warranties would have covered it, as technically it hadn't failed.

If you join the facebook group, there is a group buy for the tool to fix this known issue. It costs around £40/£45 and is apparently a 10 minute DIY fix

I don't use it too often either but it's useful for the F3X groups alone.

BMW F3X UK Owners Club (an ex member from here runs it). When you are accepted, search the group for steering rack. The issue is related to compression cups which need adjusting

For anyone who's interested it's using tool MS00084 from the attached PDF and tightening the big nut on the steering rack perhaps a quarter of a turn to take out any play

I can't see why BMW are replacing racks at thousands of pounds if all you need to do is tighten a nut.

I’m guessing it’s classed as a non serviceable part, when my diff bearings were on their way out in my e87, the whole diff was replaced as BMW don’t supply the bearings, just complete diffs.

It shows that you might be able to tighten the rack up on the F30 too though in some of these clunking cases perhaps.
BMW often seem to like changing expensive parts rather than trying to fix up the part that's already in the car I find, which you don't mind when under warranty.. but when your not ....
