The Ď95 was a 330i M Sport to be precise. 96 onwards were 332i M Sports.

I had an s50b32 car and an s52 car... there were things I preferred about the s52 car
(mostly that it kind of had the miata charm-- you could WOT it for ages and the suspension/brakes were so much faster than the engine that you never really got yourself into trouble)

MY cynical view played out
BMW marketing: "Hey, why is the profit margin on the E series M3 so small?"
M div engineers :" Well, we at the M div dream up an M specific motor, suspension and sometimes gearbox to make it a real driver's car. That cost time and money"

BMW marketing: "Hummm...Don't think we are ok with that!"
M div engineers : "Well, Just look at the s54, s65 and 85 they are..."
BMW marketing: "Ok stop talking...the F generation on M cars is coming soon...So all the guys working on the engine design are fired! just put bigger turbos and a tune on the regular N55 and paint it in M colors...people buying these cars have no idea anyway... just make it feel fast"
M div engineers : " Are you sure? the car will be fast but will lack some soul and we may lose some enthusiasts"
BMW marketing: "there are more chumps buying car fake M cars now than enthusiasts...We know this as we have been putting the M badge on everything...and they are selling like hot cakes...In short, F the enthusiasts there aren't enough of them to make a difference anyways...from now on M stands for Money baby!!!! and most of the ppl that want M cars today can't even drive a stick..."
Few years later...
BMW marketing: "See, we told you those fools would lap up an upgraded 335 for $30K more...now..for the G series...why are we wasting money on DCT or manuals trannys... just put a ZF 8 and in and call it "M-tuned" those idiots will pay even more for it..."
