Unhappy BMW F30 LCI LED Headlight Vertical Aim Control Failure

Hey,

Wondering if anyone can help...

I have a BMW F30 2013. I use to have Xenon lights but did a retrofit to 2016 LCI LED Headlights. They've been running fine for the last 1.5 years. Last week I had an error pop up on the dash "Headlight vertical aim control failure"

I don't see any visible difference in the performance of the lights so just want to get rid of the problem on the dash. The only thing of note (which may be expected is when I switch the engine off the fault does not appear). When I start it again and the lights auto level the error appears.

Does anyone suggest any actions before I take the car to get diagnosed?

When you start the headlights, do the headlights go through the adjustment phase?

They should aim slightly down, then come back up.

Hey. They do yes. They do exactly that.

Update on this. When I start the car the n/s headlight levels immediately but goes up and down very quickly. Shortly after the o/s headlight levels at what I'd describe normal pace.

Usually both headlights level in sync. It appears one does after the other now.

I doubt there's anything wrong with any of the the control units (LHML, LHMR). Unfortunately, judging by your account it seems like there is indeed a malfunction with the actuator on the driver side headlight.

I'll get it on diagnostics to see if that is the case.

If it is actuator how much do you think I'd be looonig at? Is it built inside the light?

The actuator is built on the inside of the headlight and I have no idea how hard it is to tinker with it.

I'd bet it's probably pretty hard

I also think that BMW only sells full units - no replacement parts for them.

I've had a look on parts catalogue and looks like they do it as an individual part:

https://www.etkbmw.com/bmw/en/parts/info/HEAD+LIGHT+VERTICAL+AIM+CONTROL/63117401878

About £70 I reckon. Is this what you'd class as an acutator?

Oh, interesting - seems that they do provide some parts for them!
That does indeed seem a potential part.

That said, you need to do a bit of diagnosing before you go buying replacement parts.

I'm not trying to be cute but have you thought about changing back to the HIDs? The reason why I ask is because the Xenons are supposed to be much better. I have the LEDs and they're only slightly better than the Halogens.
