BMW 2014 F30 320i no crank no start ignition starter fault
not my car but a car towed into my shop. customer explained the car died on them while driving and then it wouldn't start after. started checking the voltage of the battery and crossing that off the list, It was under voltage so we replaced the battery but still no luck. checked the positive battery terminals under the hood making sure everything was tight and there was no corrosion, i managed to take them off and clean them just incase. still no luck. next was the starter motor. wasn't too difficult to remove so we removed that and checked that it would crank outside of the car and it did under regular 12 volts. got me starting to think there's a draw somewhere or a power/ground wire is corroded behind the engine block or underneath the car. i put a new starter in the car since the old one was out and connected all the necessary plugs and wires. connected a power probe to check there is a constant voltage to the starter and it showed 12 constant but when i was trying to crank it dropped to 6.7 and 7 volts. checked the wire at the front power terminal under the hood and got the same result. am i going about this the correct way or am i missing something? Electrical is definitely not my strong suit so anyone with any information that could help me track this problem down would be much appreciated.
