Hyundai Considers Genesis RK Sports Sedan to Take on F30 3-series

On the heels of Jaguar revealing its aspirations for a potential F30 3-series fighter, Hyundai's CEO is now also dropping hints about a potential F30 competitor. John Krafcik recently said to Automotive News that "The Genesis Coupe is in the same segment, really, as the 3-series coupe" and "One of the things we're thinking is: Should we do something that's a sedan version of that?"

If it came to fruition, the Genesis sports sedan would share the same RWD platform now used for the Genesis sedan and coupe, but styling would be closer to the Genesis Coupe's sportier looks than the Genesis sedan's large sedan styling. According to Automotive News' news, the vehicle has been in Hyundai's pipeline since 2006 and is internally codenamed the "RK."

The small sports sedan segment is already an ultra competitive sphere, with the 3-series, C-class, A4, IS, and G35, but it sounds like the competition could be heating up even more if both Jaguar and Hyundai both throw their hats in the ring with their very own sports sedan.

The one thing that all the competitors share in common is that they are all gunning for the king of the segment - the 3-series. And we cannot wait to see what standard BMW will set when it unleashes its next generation F30 3-series next year!

I thought it will take Hyundai 3-4 years to get into this segment. Well the genesis coupe has gotten great reviews in the sporty coupe segment (beating the '11 Mustangs) so this should be interesting. The genesis has the power and the handling down, I guess it just needs to be more luxurious and refined to compete with the F30.

how about the mechanical aspects of the car? do you think those are up to par with the upper-tier manufacturers. Let's face it, those cars are built cheap. Sure, you'll have the power and the handling. But this is a Korean company (no offense to Korea) who's manufacturing is not well known for it's durability. Something to think about, i guess..

The Hyundays even have good safety ratings both in EuroNCAP and IIHS.

That being said, I'll stick to German cars, even if it means getting a new HPFP every year.

This has become less relevant for the US market: the epicenter of the throw-away society... The average American thinks: why would I drive the same car for 10-15 years, when I can get a new car every 2-3 years and toss the old one...

The days when car manufacturers, particularly MB, were designing every component to last 1Mil miles are LOOOONG gone!

This Korean company has the best warranty in the business - 5 years/60k miles plus 10 years for the powertrain. That should tell you something about their confidence in the quality and durability of their cars.

Below is a review of the genesis coupe. I have revised my opinion of Hyundai in the last two years and I think the way Hyundai is going, most people will too over the next few years.

Hyundai is biting off way more than it can chew. For them to say that the genesis coupe is on the same level as the 3 series coupe is blasphemy.

Did they really just say, "The Genesis Coupe is in the same segment, really, as the 3-series coupe"?? Are they serious? Hahahaha

bmw needs to step there game up. i have a 328i costs a little more then the 3.8 genesis. i know the gen coupe is plastic inside and the bmw has a better interior overall. but im a little shocked how bmw cant put a engine that has more power in the 2011 328i then the 3.8 genesis which costs less and is a lottt faster

Hyundai is being a little optimistic, but I would love to have a decently cheap, fun, RWD sports sedan, with lesser build quality (parts bin), and prestige than a BMW 3 series as a daily driver. Basically something with the price less than a base 1 series, but with ~280-300 hp, RWD, and sized like a 3 series. Get the handling right and we have a deal.

lol, you are asking for a mustang sedan with the track pack! There's an idea for Ford BTW - make a 4 door version based on the mustang platform and see how successful it is!

I don't care what anyone says, but not much in the same price range can match the handling of a BMW... for car enthusiasts anyway. Then you're talking porsche, jag, etc

For your average joe who wants to get from point A to point B with 300hp under the hood, a BMW is just an overpriced toy when they can get something like a Genesis for cheaper. And I don't blame them... I would do the same.

For me, 10 years after it was was built, I still get massive amounts of pleasure driving my E46 330Ci with almost 200K km on the clock. I have not once, ever, driven a modern asian automobile (Mitsu, Acura, Lexus, etc) and been able to come remotely close to the handling and drive quality of my 10 year old car.... and my E90 is just as pleasant to drive, if not more refined than the E46.

I simply don't understand reviews that bring a car like the Genesis on par with a 3-series (335). I've tried the Genesis. It handles like butter. It handles like most other Asian cars.

I even drove my friend's fully loaded C300 the other day and the handling felt like butter, it sucked... and my friend thought his hair was going to catch fire when he pushed my E90 through corners he would never have tried with his merc. He said the driving experience was like having the car on rails.

I will sum it up ...Hyundai is a POS and that is all there is, I am scared of even thinking how high must these CEOs be to make such idiotic comments....no offence to the Koreans here..you have to understand they just wants their bonus and get the hell out....

I wouldnt even take a Hyundai or caught dead in it if I were given one for free....or may be even if someone paid me to drive one...

The Germans with rule the EU economy......
