On our 2014 328d with 100k miles, the intake manifold already started melting..
Recall parts are not yet available, but the car is at the dealer and they are looking into it.

Anyone else with those issues?

I'm curious.
Was there a check engine light before this, and for how long?

No check engine light, even after the car had stopped working for a moment and smoke came out from under the hood. Was able to start the engine again and drive home slowly. Then I found 6-7 errors in the ECU, but the check engine light was still off.

Interesting, now it makes me wonder if it needs updates in engine ecu firmware too. The EGR issues and especially boost leaks will throw errors and limp mode really quickly on newer firmware.

I had my EGR cooler checked last year under recall, but given a clean bill of health….not replaced.
I also fought in 2019 for some time when my HPFP self-destructed (both on my 2017 330d).
Initially BMW argued I had wrecked it with “dirty fuel”, but when receipts for the fuel in the 950 miles since I purchased the car, BMW rolled-over and paid for the HPFP and the rest of the fuel supply system.
It intrigues me to know why this (Bosch) HPFP was not part of a recall here in the UK….
Why were they recalled in the US?

Mostly because differences in legal policies and lobbying

Our diesel fuel isn't as good as yours, hence why they probably said you had bad fuel in the beginning.

2014 328D 167,000km. Consistently maintained....started losing coolant...
There is coolant in my engine oil... what is the likelihood that is from an internal EGR cooler leak?

I passed the EGR cooler check several years ago,...but am thinking that is the probably culprit. Thoughts?

Dealer won't release my car due to active recall

I had a 2017 328d which was lost in a head-on collision (not my fault). I am trying to buy a 2018 328d from a BMW dealer but they won't release it because of this recall. They still say there is no fix! does anyone have info on timing of EGR cooler part availability?

Well it took 2-3 years for the Tanaka airbag fix. (Or was it 5?) and this version of egr has been open for the better part of a year so… if you want the car and they want to sell it, y’all will have to come up with a release that you acknowledge the safety recall or something. Cause it very well might be another year or two before a fix does come out with a re-engineered egr cooler.

Most of them were not. Mine wasn’t, and many many others here were not.
As I guessed at the time, and still guess, they replaced a batch, or some supplied between x and y dates is all. Not the part itself. Maybe they got rained on in transit, maybe some other reason. But those were the only ones.

Still better than the non stop Hyundai / Kia engine recalls happening

https://www.safetyresearch.net/hyund...nalty-barrier/

😅 This egr cooler is nothing to this and a few other new vehicle fire recalls

What about in the EU?

Hey guys -

About 2 months before the first recall I was living in California and noticed I was burning through coolant - a lot of it - and by the time I got to the dealership the recall had come out and they replaced my EGR cooler and the manifold as it was ingesting so much coolant.

No problems thus far, and with 100K the car is in great shape, but trying to bring it with me from the US to the EU and it doesn't seem to be recalled over there.

Does anyone know if they have a different EGR system in the EU? Worried if I ship it I won't be able to get the fix...

2014 328d (called a 320d over there).

Thanks...

Dan

I just got the recall done here in Toronto and I was going to buy a egr valve and have them replace it but the service advisor says the the new egr cooler comes with a new egr valve mated so no need for me to buy one.

He did say the system was pretty clean unlike some of the cars they're currently working on. He said there were 7 diesels in the shop right now doing the recall. I don't see the egr valve on the parts list but there's a note that says "Replacing exhaust gas recirculation cooler including exhaust gas recirculation valve." It looks brand new when I look at in the engine bay so looks to be replaced here with the cooler.

Got my hopes up reading the above… but still “no remedy available” on the BMW recall website for me.

My 2018 has a remedy available. bringit so they replaced the egr valve? Is that a Canada deal?

My notice does not mention a valve.

My notice didn't indicate one either and from reading other posts, I thought it wasn't included but the SA said he thinks it's included. When he called to give me an update, I asked about the valve again and said can you ensure the tech tests it to make sure it's good? That's when he said not to worry, BMW knows the issue and the cooler comes with a new valve attached so don't worry. I just took his word for it and when I got the invoice, it said replaced.

I popped the hood when I got home and sure enough it looks new to me..

Please excuse the dirty Canadian engine bay.. lol

I'm starting to think the EGR coolers came with a valve the entire time. Example is this catalog photo of the old cooler (11-71-7-823-210) from a BMW dealer, the valve is included.

I had mine completed on Monday. You get a new cooler and valve. I also had them do a coolant flush, that was $195.

It still boggles my mind how you had to pay for the coolant flush. The recall allows dealers to bill time and materials for the coolant change to BMWNA!
