I'll concede that long downhill routes can benefit from engine braking; I was more responding to general use of downshifting/engine braking when coming to a stop.
Shifting/rev-matching without the clutch can present its own problems (grinding the synchros). If you've gone this long without trouble, consider yourself lucky, but I don't think it's a recommended practice. |

Still, would you catch a break if your engine breaks while you're engine braking?
I heel-and-toe every day, but never for extended periods. |
