New auto gearbox on its way

I've just been told I need a new 8AT gearbox for my F30 Sport. The car has less than 20000 miles on and about 5000 miles ago developed a really annoying loud whistle whilst going in reverse. BMW have booked me in to swap it out next week. Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue???

That's interesting, my gearbox has only covered 9K miles since July last year but for the last 1,500-2,000 miles I've noticed a distinct whine in reverse that wasn't there in the early days. Not bad, but may have to watch out for it getting worse.

I think most mfr's just swap the box and return to factory these days - the effort of stripping a box (in a dealer) for even a small problem is too much in terms of time/cost.

Hey Rob did it start with a light whistle/ whine... mine is on 7k and I already have a noticeable noise in reverse...thinking I need to take it in

Same as Mungo and I'm only 3K in. Not enough to bother me though. Fingers crossed things do not deteriorate eh!!

Yep, initially when the car was new there was no noise at all then one day I noticed it but it wasn't too loud. Now it's quite distinct, not worryingly so but definitely noticeable.

These new 8 spd tranny's are so complicated a dealer wouldn't want to work on them. They go to a depot for re-manufacturing.

Hi all, just to give you an update. Mines got progressively worse over the last 5k or so. It's now started to jolt forward when I come to a stop, like its having trouble selecting a gear. It's booked in for Monday and it looks like just in time too.
