How Cold is Your Cold Weather Driving?
What is the coldest your BMW has been driven in?
Traveling through Utah over the holidays the outside temp was -16 F (-27 C). The F30 handled the cold well. Are there any issues that can be caused by freeway driving and then sitting overnight in that cold a temp? |

Last winter (or maybe the one before?), there were several days/nights that that hit and stayed at -40 degrees Celsius. My car is parked outside 24/7 and it started and drove without any issues.

^^ Nice to know!
Most of my Cadillac's quit working properly around -10. All the electronics were slow, including the speedo! Nice to see the Germans got this right |

Maybe the screen took a few seconds longer to start up, but nothing that made me feel like I was waiting for it. I do remember the hvac red LED matrix ghosting a bit when I changed the temps/settings.
Other than that, just standard things like letting the car warm up a few seconds and taking it easy while the oils warmed up. My hands and butt also did not enjoy the frigid leather lol. |

Battery charge warning comes up normally after day or two in these temperatures, trickle charger is required. What's funny is that I recall seeing high 30s readouts while driving too (and mid 40s Celsius, when it was sitting in the sun in the summer), talk about temperature range throughout a year. |

Earlier in the drive, the temps in SoCal were around 60 F, resulting in a temp range of 76 degrees over the course of several hours.

Coldest? Probably around -22F / -30 C, but not in my current BMW. It was around -15F / -26C last week and the new M4 did just as well as my Z4's did. I got to hoon around a high school parking lot and try out all the driving modes in about 5 inches of snow. That wouldn't have worked on a Z4 due to its smaller ground clearance.
The biggest issue is tires. I haven't had a car for which all-season tires are available in nearly a decade and a half. Summer tires are *really bad* on cold roads. Good winter tires are a must on cold roads, even without snow. My BMW's have always been happy in the cold. For 30 years every BMW I've had, whether made in Bavaria or in South Carolina, has started and functioned perfectly in cold weather.

Coldest so far for my car. It's usually in a parking garage. Only issue I ever had.

Coldest for me is around -20°F, it's maybe just a couple times a year here in Anchorage. Normal is around the 20s, normal overnight is teens or singles. We get temps down to 0F or slightly negative maybe every month or so in the winter. Cold soaked cars suck though, that's where things just don't like to work, shocks, tires, etc. Haven't had any problems, but it's hard getting the thing to heat up sometimes. I take a slightly longer route to the highway from the gym to give my car some extra time to recover, as it doesn't take long in our temps to completely chill the engine and oil. Sometimes you can't even scrape off the ice if you leave it outside until you've gotten the damn thing a little warmed up. Then there's battery, etc.
Problem is that as it gets colder and colder, it gets harder and harder to get the engine to produce any heat before you have to go above 2000rpm and do something like get on a highway.

I don't drive when the temp drops below freezing unless it's absolutely necessary.

Coldest for me has been in mid teens 15°F. Started up, Warmed up (thank god for cold weather package), and drove just normal to where I had to go.

In temperature around -20c or even colder I get the low battery alarm which turn off some accessories to preserve the battery. Sometime it will go off when you restart the car after a long drive. But sometime it won't and it is annoying. There are many rattle that will show up when you drive in very cold temperature. Also if you happen to park on the street like I do the suspension and the wheel liner get fill with snow and when you keep driving in cold weather it will eventually fill with ice. Generally it give you quite a harsh ride as the tire bounce directly in the ice and some strange noise. Finally when the wheel line get fill with ice you won't be able to use the full steering angle.

-11 F or -24 C but my car sits in an attached garage over night. It sits outside during weekdays, but I don't think I have had a cold start with a temp quite as low during the daytime. Anyway, no issues at all regarding cold temps for me yet.
