I ended up using everything in this thread lol. Opening up the bumper, a hook tool - everything. It was a struggle. Even after getting one grille out, the other grille had a tab that decided to fight me the entire way.

I wanted to keep the chrome surround and replace the grilles with M4 dual slats and even that fought me a bit.

Keep in mind that we are talking injection molded plastic, variances in tolerances are going to mean some things go easy and some are going to be a cast iron bitch.

Had to use a combination of both methods to get the first grill out but second grill was easy from the side to remove.

Fairly straight forward mod, even with having to use both methods only took around 30 minutes to do the whole thing and looks a lot better than with the stock grills on

Thanks for the info in this thread on both ways of doing this

Pissing hell this took me forever!

Finally got it done.

Have changed my no-line 11 slat as standard on my ED to the M-Sport/Sportline 8 slat with the chrome surround still - the full black one is the m-performance one right? I wanted to keep the silver surround - I think all black wouldn't have fit with the ED bumper.

Anyway;

Tried to take the approach of un-clipping through the existing slats, tried my man hands, tried some tools, a crocheting hook all to no avail, I managed to get to them just with a bit of brute force but the clips would just not shift!

Have attached a close up of the centre top clip so you can see my issues, it has almost wing like things.

Uploaded some pics of the finished article in a thread in the UK forums; http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...4#post17930824

Much appreciated DIY!

Ordered a pair of piano black grilles for my F34 GT and using this guide everything went swiftly with a little patience. Took around 30 mins in total.

I found that unless you have really skinny hands and forearms it's super tricky
to remove the stock grilles without tools. So I'd advice sticking with the original method of loosening the bumper to give yourself some elbow-room.

Here's a pic of the final result:

Thanks for the guide!

I personally used the grab and pull method - no broken tabs. Took less than 5 minutes!

Just changed mine out today. I got a piece of 3/8" wide flat bar and bent it into an uneven U shape, one long side one short side and about 1" across the bottom. Fed it through the slats and starting at top left used it to depress the tab whilst pulling the grill, once that tab released I worked my way around releasing each in turn until the whole grill popped out. No broken tabs, no gouges or skinned knuckles. Released the second grill by putting my hand through the space left by the grill being removed. Popped the new ones in, total time 5 minutes to bend the bar and 5 minutes the change out the grills. Perfect

I just installed mine the other day and I someone managed to split / crack one of the slots on the bumper that the grill tabs slid in to. Has anyone else run into this> I was definitely pulling hard, but not nearly hard enough for this to happen.

Thanks

Hey guys, first post hehe.

Anyways, I can confirm, you could forcefully pull out the grills, as those tabs took way too long for me to try to press, so I pulled it out and clips broke (oh well, I hate chrome anyways) on one grill, but I managed to take out the other one without breaking anything.

Took me about 5 minutes.

I tried the force pull method as I wasn't too worried about breaking the original grill, but it just wouldn't budge. Ended up following the OP's instruction. Took 20mins overall.

Gotta put some more man strength into it

but seriously, I guess for some people, it worries them breaking something on the car, I know I was a tad scared pulling the grills out.

Great thread.

Battled trying to do this yesterday without research. Checked this thread half an hour ago and 15 minutes later it's done. Easy.

Oh and here is a pic of my black 4GC with it done because i've not seen many images of them on a black f34/6
