Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – February 26, 2014 … The 2014 BMW 328i Sedan won Consumer Reports Top Picks 2014 Award for the Sport Sedan Category.

With its 240-horsepower BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-4 engine, featuring a 6 speed manual transmission or an 8 speed Steptronic transmission, the BMW 2014 328i delivers excellent performance and legendary BMW driving dynamics with class-leading value thanks to its excellent results in retained value and through the BMW Ultimate Service® No Cost maintenance program.

According to Consumer Reports; the BMW 3 Series has long set the standard for sports sedans. The current model delivers excellent handling and a high fun-to-drive factor. It’s also roomier, more luxurious, and more fuel-efficient than past models. The 328i’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine is quick and thrifty, posting 28 mpg overall, which is best among gas-powered models in its class.

Consumer Reports puts such a premium on comfort and practicality you would think the 3 series wouldn't have a chance (even though it gets great gas mileage and the pick is for "sports sedan"). They just usually go so vanilla. I think this makes the award that much more impressive!

Actually I think this illustrates just how far BMW has gone away from their original DNA in order to reach a broader market... I'll bet that winning this designation from CR was never an internal BMW goal in the past, but that it made the list of goals for the F30...

Consumers occasionally deviates from their plain vanilla heritage. Over a decade ago, they declared the E39 530i the best car they had ever tested.

Actually, I would argue it could be the opposite. The goal of BMW while it's the "ultimate driving machine" is to sell as many cars as possible. CR doesn't really speak to the enthusiast but I think the reality is that CR sells (or detracts) more cars than the rest of the auto magazines combined.

Agreed. I like the F30 for a number of reasons, but after driving it as a loaner for 2 weeks, I was happy to get my E90 back. My wife put it best - the F30 just felt a little bland, a little too polished, like a Lexus. I think BMW set out with the goal of making the F30 palatable to a wider audience, and this CR win is just icing on that cake. It's a great car and deserves the win though. I mean, if you're going to pander to the masses, you should at least do it right, and they nailed it.

They have no shame admitting this publicly. The BMW mission has evolved from "The Ultimate Driving Machine" to "We must outsell Lexus". BMWs competition has become Lexus, when it always has been other BMWs. They have deliberately stepped down their game to increase sales.

Hey, I found the video review from CR. The guy is definitely not hardcore, but he does seem to be looking for a lot of the right things in a sports sedan. I still think it's impressive that BMW has found the balance needed to win this award without selling their soul. Now maybe you BMW long-timers are right and BMW is getting soft -- time will tell. I feel as long as they allow us to order our BMW with an aggressive setup that delivers the performance we want -- who cares if they offer some watered down models to increase revenues. Let's just hope they continue to offer both ends of the spectrum...

So then why is Lexus these days building cars that are better "driving machines" than BMW?

Autoweek has commented on the CR results as well (link below - #9 of 11). Although I prefer the turbo 6 myself, I thought their characterization of the 328i's engine as "a poor substitute for the brand’s magical straight-six 335i" was too harsh. What that engine delivers with just 2.0 liters is a technological marvel in my opinion.

Bingo. There's no reason why a car the size of an E39 5 series should have a 4 cylinder. It's a great engine and all, but seems out of place for the size of the car. The car reminds me of what a RWD Maxima would be like.
