F30 330d humming/buzzing/rattle on idle.

Hi Guys

I recently purchased a 2.5 year old F30 330d M Sport from a BMW main dealer.

An amazing car and I am delighted with it.

There is a low frequency humming/buzzing/rattle noise that I noticed though when on idle that really bothers me. I’ve own many diesels and appreciate how they sound. It starts to be noticeable when revs drop below 1000 rpm. It can be heard from inside the cabin and outside seems more on the passenger side. I haven’t noticed any vibrations just the unpleasant noise. I see no difference to it when stationary in D or P. Over 1000rpm and while driving it sounds okay. I think that once or twice in the last 3 weeks I think that it was not doing that.

A technician from my local BMW garage, different to where I purchased it from, had a few mins look at it and said: it sounds like a 330d. Maybe he didn’t hear it properly, maybe it wasn’t as apparent during the demo as I find it hard to believe for it to be normal.

Please find sample attached under this link, it was after 25 mins drive so the engine was warmed up. I can hear it on cold as well.

Has anyone came a cross issue like this?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers

This is going to sound ridiculous, but check your door lock pins. They caused this on my 320d.

There are a number of solutions to fix this, but the best one is to get the fussy (soft) side of velcro tape and place it around the inside of the lock pin barrel. It's easy enough to remove with a trim removal tool.

The other area that rattled in my car was the centre console trim, down by the leg of the passenger side.

I fixed this easily but affixing sound deadening material (same stuff you use for audio deadening on doors), to the back of the panels.

All rattles are now gone!
