I purchased my car with just under 12k miles as a CPO. It is correct that I don't know how the previous owner drove the car, or if the auto start/stop feature was being used. It had two oil changes on record when I bought it, and I've never used the auto start/stop in the entirety of my ownership. For whatever that's worth.

Do you know where the vehicle was assembled? SA or Germany?

Yes, it was assembled in the Munich, Germany plant according to the VIN.

My 2012 328i with 69,600 miles went in for an oil change at the dealer last week. I asked them to look into the timing chain issue although I could not hear anything wrong with it. After a week (of supposedly doing various tests - boroscope, sound, etc), they said that BMW thought my car was fine and does not need a TC replacement. I am relieved, but will continue to pay attention to any telltale sounds, esp since my car will cross the 70k mark very soon.

Car assembled in Munich. Used start/stop initially but had it coded around year 3 to prevent start/stop from engaging.

I just picked up my car, and the unusual whining sound is completely gone. Now it's back to the regular whine and injector noise it always made .

Anyway, they replaced the oil pump chain (which I'd hoped they would) along with the timing chain and guides. Here are the notes for those of you interested:

NOTES:
RAN VEHICLE TO CONFIRM COMPLAINT OF GRINDING/WHINING SOUND. AS PER SHOP FOREMAN SOUND PRESENT AT IDLE. AS PER THE FOREMAN REMOVED THE DRIVE BELT, DISCONNECTED THE WASTE GATE, REMOVED THE SPLASH PANELS AND SOUND PRESENT FROM BELOW. INSTALLED THE SPLASH PANELS, WASTE GATE AND DRIVE BELT. REMOVED VALVE COVER AS PER TC. REMOVED AND REPLACED THE TIMING CHAINS, CHAIN GUIDES, AND OIL PUMP CHAIN MODULE AS PER TC. PRIMED THE ENGINE OIL AS PER SIB AND STARTED ENGINE. CLEARED THE FAULT MEMORY AND CONFIRMED REPAIR, SET VEHICLE FOR EXGTENDED QC TEST DRIVE. VEHICLE PASSED QC TEST DRIVE. AT THIS TIME THE VEHICLE DRIVES AS PER BMW.

Can you share the coding steps?

I have Bimmercode. Occasionally Ill use Eco on the highway and forget that it automatically engages the start stop feature.... first stop after exiting highway and... Doh!

Anyhow. I would love to disable for good.

This was done a the dealership. Next time you go for an oil change, let them know that you would like to code the auto start/stop to remember the last selected setting and they will be able to do it for you.

On the app it's Front Electronic Module > start stop function off by default >
switch to active

After that Front Electronic Module > start stop function remember last setting >switch to active

then hit code

Good to hear it turned out well, and I'm glad they replaced the oil pump chain module as well.

In the service notes it says they reset the fault codes - did you have any check engine light or fault codes before taking it to the dealer that indicated the timing chain issue?

Nope, no warning lights, codes or messages anywhere before I dropped it off.

However, I have noticed at least twice since getting it back, some unusual clanking or rattling sounds when first starting up the car. It goes away quickly but wasn’t present before. I’m wondering if the chain wasn’t installed properly.

I have a '14 F30 n20, and have noticed a slight whine between 1-3k rpm but only when the a/c is running. The whine rises and falls as the revs do. I'm a bit concerned about the timing chain but since my sound seems tied to the a/c is it possible it's something else? Reading all these posts here about the timing chain I wasn't sure if people experiencing the timing chain issues noticed whether the sound was dependent on the a/c or if it was completely unrelated.

Car's out of warranty so hats why I haven't brought it to a dealer yet.

I believe the sound is independent of AC. Turn on/off the AC while the engine is running...if the whine is on/off/on/off as you cycle the AC manually then it's the AC pump

Had my car in for service today and mentioned the timing chain, even though I have not heard any sounds. He said they would check it out as they would love the warranty work.

After review, they didn't find anything wrong. He said they have to record a clip of the noise and send it to BMW for their review and approval before they will sign off on the warranty work. As such, he told me to keep close watch and if it comes up to let him know. I have 2.5 years remaining on my warranty so plenty of time to see what happens, at 50K miles now.

For what its worth, in the last year he said he has seen 3 cases of this issue. 2 were caught and replaced under warranty and 1 was a blown engine out of warranty (car had 140K miles on the clock).

I absolutely love my car. Really want to keep 10+ years. As such, hope I get this timing chain replaced for free or ill way the options of replacement out of pocket vs. selling the car and getting an upgrade.

What is the cost of doing the timing chain and oil pump chain? I'm scared I won't see issues until after 70k

Yup, just tried it again last night and the sound only appears if the a/c is running. So, guess it is more likely the a/c pump then! The sound does rise and fall along with the engine rpms, an a/c pump would do that as well?

yes your AC pump spins in direct relation to the engine speed (of course while it is engaged)
