Valve Cover Replacement

Hi all, I just wanted to see if it was common to get the valve cover replaced? I'm getting my valve cover gasket replaced due to some oil leakage, but I was just curious on actually replacing the valve cover itself? The mechanic that is working on my car says he strongly recommends it, but I just want to be sure since the valve cover runs for about $400 and I haven't heard for that to be a common issue.

I have a 2008 335i with 120k miles - if that helps at all.

Also, he hasn't opened up the value to see if the cover is damaged at all.

Common but not always required.

Plastic Cover

Not only do the integrated ports get clogged but the cover is very prone to cracking just from removal .
.
A poor seal from the cover hurts the PCV system and ends up coating your intake valves with gunk.
.
.
Yes - negotiate the price on the part but replace it for sure if you plan to keep the car.

the cover becomes brittle and cracks over time.
if you have a leaking gasket, pay for a new cover to save money and time later.
also, worth it to check the eccentric shaft sensor for leaks. if it's leaking replace it. hell, that that mileage, if it ain't leaking it will be soon, so I'd replace it preventatively.

Thank you everyone for the info! Everything worked out the valve cover since the mechanic thoroughly checked the cover for any cracks or leaks and it turned out to be ok, even after he torqued it with the new gasket.

Next time I get the gasket replaced, I'll def get the cover replaced as well(hoping it doesn't start crack before then)
