JDAURIA F31 MSport Journal

Quick journal on the wagon. I’ve already done a few little OEM+ modifications and preventative maintenance, this will act more as a logbook. Unfortunately, I do not have photos from some of the previous work I had done of the vehicle. I have really enjoyed this vehicle, it’s been a rock solid daily, it’s practical and should be holding onto it for a while. Really wish it had MSport Brakes. I was searching for an E91 for a while, but the N52 is underpowered, not that the N20 is powerful but the turbo does help. Went down a rabbit hole on big turbo upgrade for the N20 but that would be the last thing I would do at this point. E46 Wagon is still on my mind but finding a factory manual can be difficult and finding one that is not a complete rust bucket. “Maintenance over Mods” philosophy, details below:

06.25.22: Wrench Day - Transmission Service kit and Transfer Case Service.

Order the Transmission Service kit from FCP Euro (ZF kit). It was costly at $312 but worth it in my opinion for peace of mind. No issues at all in my TC or transmission but 60k-ish interval on these two items aren't super expensive in the grand scheme of things and are fairly straightforward DIYs. Transfer case fluid was about $50 with an OEM plug picked up at the local dealership.

Transfer case was done first to let the vehicle cool down after a drive. There is no drain plug, just a single fill/drain plug. No real access without removing the transfer case reinforcement plate. Really a shame the fluid is so expensive; barely any fluid comes out and barely any goes back in.

Next up was the transmission service. This was even easier than transfer case. Remove fill plug. Drain the ATF, roughly 4.5 quarters came out. Fluid was fairly brown but actually not as bad as we thought it would be. Then remove the pan bolts, and another 0.5 quarters or so came out with the pan once removed. New pan on with new hardware. Fill until it leaks out (fresh fluid is green). Start vehicle, run through park, neutral, drive, reverse. Fill if necessary; then run through gears 1-8. Fill if necessary. Test drive and check for leaks.

07.19.22 As maintenance is up to date and a few items have been sitting in boxes, figured I would install the MST turbo inlet and the M1/M2 Drive Select Wiring harness. The harness took about 5 weeks to arrive after purchase.

Maintenance:
[X] Front and Rear Differential Service at 62k
[X] Intake Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Cabin Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Transfer Case Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Automatic Transmission Service (preventative) at 64k
[ ] Coolant Flush/Fill
[ ] Oil Service @ 67,000
[ ] Spark Plug Service @ 76,200

OEM+ Modifications:
[X] F8x M3 Paddle Shifter Retrofit @ 62,750
[X] iND M1/M2 button install @ 62,750
[X] MST Turbo inlet pipe upgrade @ 65,050
[X] M1/M2 Drive Mode Retrofit/Harness @ 65,050
[ ] 6WB Digital Cluster Upgrade
[ ] Aftermarket Chargepipe (ER or VRSF)
[ ] Aftermarket Boost pipe (ER)
[ ] Aftermarket Intercooler (AA or VRSF)
[ ] OEM Rear Mudflaps
[ ] MPerformance Rear Diffuser
[ ] BBK upgrade (MPerformance or similar)

Next up: Oil Service

Up first is the M1/M2 Drive Select Wiring Harness. Need to unplug the battery as we will be removing the steering wheel airbag. With F31, the process takes a few extra steps. Wish It was as simple to open the side compartment and use a 10mm ratchet to unplug the battery...Unfortunately, the floor cargo cover needs to be removed, along with various rivets and plastic 10mm nuts to access the side compartment area underneath where the battery is.

Follow this guidance for the remainder of the wiring harness install: https://www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid...ature=youtu.be

Overall, straightforward and easy modification. I will say my wire color in the center console did not line up with the install video. But I just followed the same pins he removed.

Next is the MST Turbo inlet install. Do this on a cold engine or you will burn yourself. The quality is way better than OEM and should last the life of the vehicle. In Sport+ you can really hear the turbo spooling up. Preventatively replacing these plastic pipes is worth the investment as the plastic will degrade over time and develop a boost leak. Did notice a little bit of oil coming from one of the hoses so might research into an oil catch can modification. If you have done this please let me know what you did!

This was a good guide for the install:

I will say everything was a tight fight upon re-installing. Definitely will need manual dexterity when removing the (1) 10mm nut and reinstalling it. Careful when installing the clamps, they are different sizes. I thought they were the same and had to take everything out again. I did this entire install from the top of the engine compartment. You can do this from underneath as well, I didn't feel like jacking the car up and removing the undercarriage pan. I am sure if you went this route, re-installing the 10mm nut would be very easy.

08.02.22: Install MPerformance Mirror Caps. Found a brand new set for over 30% off so I decided to jump on it.

Maintenance:
[X] Front and Rear Differential Service at 62k
[X] Intake Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Cabin Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Transfer Case Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Automatic Transmission Service (preventative) at 64k

[ ] Oil Service @ 67,000
[ ] Spark Plug Service @ 76,200

OEM+ Modifications:
[X] F8x M3 Paddle Shifter Retrofit @ 62,750
[X] iND M1/M2 button install @ 62,750
[X] MST Turbo inlet pipe upgrade @ 65,050
[X] M1/M2 Drive Mode Retrofit/Harness @ 65,050
[X] MPerformance Mirror Caps
[ ] 6WB Digital Cluster Upgrade
[ ] Aftermarket Chargepipe (ER or VRSF)
[ ] Aftermarket Boost pipe (ER)
[ ] Aftermarket Intercooler (AA or VRSF)
[ ] OEM Rear Mudflaps
[ ] MPerformance Rear Diffuser
[ ] BBK upgrade (MPerformance or similar)

Easy install, maybe 20 minutes. Tilt mirrors upwards, use a non-marking prying tool to slowly unclip the mirror off the internal housing. Careful not to put too much upward pressure or the glass can break. I wouldn't do this in colder temperatures either. After the mirror assembly is off, you can see (3) press clips holding the OEM mirror cap on. Simply work your way around by compressing the clips while pulling the caps off. Technically you could just pull the cap off but you run the risk of breaking the clips.

MPerformance mirror caps do you clip in, they are mounted with screws. Possibly to deter people from stealing them? Simple washer and screw. Reverse install.

08.26.22: Oil Service complete

Not much to show for it. Bought 5L of LM from FCP Euro, went 5w-30 this time instead of 0W-30 with Mann filter. Took about 30 mins start to finish. Love that the oil filter housing is on the top of the engine bay and not underneath.

09.13.22: Replaced Rear Brake Line Bracket. PN#34406854898

Let me start off by saying, this might have been the most frustrating DIY I have ever done in 15+ years. Really have to question the BMW engineer who made this. 1) its made of plastic 2) its directly above the driveshaft that is spinning constantly 3) it's integrated into the entire gas tank. 4) It cost more to ship the part than it was for the actual part ($7).

So, my F31 was making that horrible noise when you accelerate hard. It sounds like a terrible turbo coming from the center armrest area. I watched this YT video for the DIY:

Unfortunately, did not have a lift to do this service and I HIGHLY recommend you have one when doing this replacement. I did not and did it entirely on my back with the help of a very generous enthusiast. Here is a break down of what I would suggest someone does because I didn't do it this way and it took me way longer and numerous expletives. The stealership wanted $838 and 6 hours to do this job. Took us about 2.5 hours and if we did it again properly on a lift, I bet it would've taken 1-1.5 hours tops.

1) Lift/Raise the vehicle
2) Remove the cross brace and center brace: various torx bolts (T60 and a smaller size)
3) Remove the entire exhaust system (yes, the entire thing and if you are OEM like me it's going to be the entire length of the car)
4) Remove the driveshaft: Might be able to lower it?
5) Remove heat shield: 10mm plastic rivets and 10mm metal rivets
6) Lower gas tank: you will need to lower both sides. This is necessary because the bracket is mounted to a stud attached to the undercarriage.

Maintenance:
[X] Front and Rear Differential Service at 62k
[X] Intake Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Cabin Filter Replacement at 62k
[X] Transfer Case Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Automatic Transmission Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Oil Service @ 66,300
[X] Brake Line Bracket @ 66,750
[ ] Coolant Flush/Fill
[ ] Spark Plug Service @ 76,200

OEM+ Modifications:
[X] F8x M3 Paddle Shifter Retrofit @ 62,750
[X] iND M1/M2 button install @ 62,750
[X] MST Turbo inlet pipe upgrade @ 65,050
[X] M1/M2 Drive Mode Retrofit/Harness @ 65,050
[X] MPerformance Mirror Caps
[ ] 6WB Digital Cluster Upgrade
[ ] Aftermarket Chargepipe (ER or VRSF)
[ ] Aftermarket Boost pipe (ER)
[ ] Aftermarket Intercooler (AA or VRSF)
[ ] OEM Rear Mudflaps
[ ] MPerformance Rear Diffuser
[ ] BBK upgrade (MPerformance or similar)

While I was taking a break, I was able to snap a couple quick photos of Brian's wagons. Cleanest E91 in the world (335d) and an amazing one-off E46 M3 Wagon being built.

Following this Journal religiously!
I've had my 2017 F31 330i Xdrive AW/Coral Red with 75k Miles for about a month now and will be following your preventative maintenance guidelines

What tire specs are you running too? I also have square 513ms, but 18x9 +29 squared that I'm dying to put on and would like to keep my stock OEM Adaptive suspension (THP pkg). What tire size do you recommend I run so that it looks somewhat clean with no crazy looking wheel gap? 245/40/18 or 255/40/18? I live in SoCal so I'm mainly looking at running Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus for daily.

Appreciate it man! I am about to hit 70k.

I'll be updating more frequently, I recently was abroad for 3 weeks and moved to Florida within the last 5 weeks.

I am running OEM Staggered 513Ms with 255/40/18 all around Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. Love the wheels and the tires (Michelin fan boy). I've run Conti DWS06 a few times on other vehicles and found the side wall to be a bit soft but that's personal opinion. Once these run out, I will probably switch to 235/275 setup

Wagon is actually having an oil service, cabin filter, and brake fluid done at the stealership. Prior to buying the vehicle, the previous owner purchased a maintenance package that doesn't run out until Dec'23, so i'll take the free service for now. Normally I would do these simple services myself.

11.16.22 - Service

Typical stealership service. Had an appointment last friday on my day off - I get there and they ask me to change my appointment to Monday because they were swamped and they guaranteed a loaner if need be...So, I agreed as I knew the service wouldn't cost me anything anyways.

Drop-off vehicle on Monday first thing, everything goes smoothly - they provide me a loaner and everything. Monday at 5pm no update, I call and they tell me the vehicle never made it into the shop. They will "try" tomorrow. Tuesday 5pm rolls around, again - vehicle does not make it into the shop...This is for a routine oil service, brake fluid service and microfilter swap LOL. I finally got the vehicle back this afternoon. Pretty stupid to have my car there for 2.5-3 days WITH an appointment. Won't be going back there again

I'll be buying an intake filter soon to swap that out as I am approaching interval

03.08.23: Armrest Swap

It's been a minute since I have posted an update. But, nothing is really needed on the F31 at the moment. Racking up the miles as I near 80k. Spark Plug Service interval is then along with the basic oil service, cabin filters, intake filters. So I'll post an update when that happens. Wagon has been flawless to date still. Haven't had time to take many photos of it though.

Armrest replacement: My original one somehow started to get real sticky in the elbow area. No matter how many times I cleaned and conditioned the area it would never come back properly. I've been meaning to purchase one and swap out the original but it was such a low priority at the time. Not until the wife came home last week and said that one of her 'shirts' was RUINED by the armrest So that lit a fire and was able to source an F8x armrest that slides on eBay. Replacement takes 5-10 minutes.
- Remove rear HVAC trim (you don't have to disconnect any of the harness)
- Spring just needs to be pushed back and up to release
- Slide the two pines out the sides
- Lift lid out carefully to know ruin the plastic gear
- Installation is reverse procedure

06.23.26 - Dealer Service

Another 3.5 months and still flawless. I am on a 1,600 mile road trip right now and while I am in North Carolina I decided to visit my favorite Stealership - Southpoint BMW. Now, I've been to a ton of dealerships; more specifically the service centers, and 95% are crap. But, I've had a few services done at Southpoint and I actually have been pleasantly surprised by them. They are efficient, communicative, and I am in-and-out. The way it should be...an oil service doesnt take 8+ hours with an appointment.

Only reason I am at the dealership for service is the previous owner paid for prepaid maintenance so I am trying to use every ounce of it until it expires this December. So while I am here I was due for oil service, cabin and intake filters and spark plugs! I did the spark plug service myself around ~50k, and now I just rolled over 80k so it was definitely time. I normally do these every 25k, but I pushed it because I knew I could get it for free.

Maintenance:
[X] Transfer Case Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Automatic Transmission Service (preventative) at 64k
[X] Oil Service @ 66,300

12.20.23 - Accessory Belt and Tensioner + Eventuri Goodness?!?

It's been a minute, since last posted/updated. 6 months flew by and still, the F31 has been flawless. Had some time this afternoon to perform some preventative interval service.

Accessory Belt and Tensioner replacement. This was actually really straightforward and only took maybe 20 minutes to replace. I used the FCP Euro video on YT for N20. FCP recommends 75k interval, and I just rolled over 85k so felt that it was time. Nothing was wrong and the belt was not squeaking, just trying to stay ahead of things. Glad I did the service because the tensioner was indeed original from 2016 and the original belt was showing some signs of cracking.

I was finally able to source an N20 Eventuri Intake System after 2 years of searching. Got a bit lucky as they made a random batch for some reason after it had been discontinued for years. Products look quality and was really looking forward to installing this but hit a small snag. The mounting bracket on the kit did not line up with the airbox mounting point for some reason. Most likely just product assembly error as the kit came pre-installed. Wish this wasnt the case because moving the bracket wont be easy with the limited space on the actual intake system. Barely fit an 8mm open-faced wrench and I still need to hold the bolt with an allen key. Hope to have this squared away soon-ish.

Next up will be an oil service and switch to an aluminum coolant flange. I'll probably end up doing the waterpump and thermostat as preventative as well since I'll be removing a coolant hose. In addition, I have noticed the steering creak/noise under low speed or at idle - I believe its due to the failing thrust bushing so I purchased the steering box repair kit.

Oh man. Such a nice build. Keep it coming! Love it.

I too have been looking for the eventuri intake for years. Did you buy it from IND? How are you dealing with the mounting piece problem?

I should do a in retrospect build thread as well. F31 + 513m wheels are such a good combo.

Yes, I bought it direct from iND during black friday. They only had 5 kits available at the time, so not sure if they still have it.

I have to dissemble the main kit and remove a few 8mm nuts that secure the bracket and rotate the bracket two holes. It's not "hard" its more so annoying that it did not come properly built. Luckily once I square it away, it's a super simple install (minus removal of the front kidney grill which is always a PITA).

I know its basically just engine bling at the end of the day, but it sure does look pretty!

Installed! My hunch was correct and that the laser cut mounting bracket on the actual intake system was incorrectly mounted from factory. So, I had to remove the various 8mm nuts, rotate the bracket one hole, and put it all back together. Afterwards, install takes maybe 10-15 mins? Super simple, the hardest piece was actually getting the front kidney grill scoop mounted correctly as that needed adjustment as well. It snaps onto the cross brace.

Induction sounds is awesome!

(Excuse the dirty engine bay)

im thinking of doing ACS springs on OEM adaptive shocks, did you have a bad reverse rake issue after installing the springs? I know others have used the "Bad Road" package spacers in the rear part #33536769473, to even out the rake with xdrive cars and ACS springs.
