Low Oil Pressure warning on 340

I had the red warning come up yesterday morning after driving about a mile so stopped the engine straight away as instructed and called BMW assistance who were very good. Oil level is fine. Garage so far say they cant find any fault but kept it overnight as said it could be down to the cold weather so want to test again today. Last week it was in because of a low coolant level. No reason was found for it losing coolant. Are there any known problems on these engines and could there be any connection? Its due its 1st service in December at 2 yrs . Currently done 13500 miles. Not happy to accept its due to cold weather as a reason....surely must at least (hopefully) be a dodgy sensor.

Hopefully the oil pressure warning is only a sensor.

I had coolant loss on mine and it was caused by a crack in the EGR valve housing. The dealership said it had seen a few cars with same fault. I think a number on here have also had the same issue.

With regards the coolant loss, there are quite a number of x40i owners who have had this warning come up. Normally around the 7-9k miles mark.

Mine is just a few miles off 10k without any such warning yet however (touches wood!).

As Grant_7 says, most of us 40i owners have topped off the coolant. I did mine at 8k (ish) and it hasn't had another drop since.

Regarding the low oil pressure, cold will make the oil thicker not thinner (thinner reducing pressure) so thats dealer bullsh1t.

Dealer should be able to screw and external oil pressure gauge into the engine and check properly - insist on this for peace of mind.

Cold weather would make the oil pressure higher, not lower

Canbus errors can show up as all sorts of things, often unrelated to the error displayed.

Low coolant after a few thousand miles seems to be common wth the x40i engines. I Have been keeping an eye on mine since seeing it mentioned on the forum. The level in the main coolant tank was approaching the min mark and the secondary smaller charge cooler one was actually at the min mark at about 5k miles.

Asked my dealer to check and top up the system while the car was in to have an annoying drivers door trim rattle fixed.

Very much doubt your oil pressure warning is temperature related and would think it is duff sensor.

Not the same car / engine but wifey had this happen on her 6 pot Z4, turned out to be the pressure relief valve sticking.

Dealer changed / inspected everything and all fine for the last 25K miles

Luckily confirmed that it is just a faulty sensor. Should be fixed on Tuesday. Suspect that original message from garage should have been, sorry we havent had time to look at it so will look at it in the morning.

At 17k i have sent oil for analysis and found zero antifreeze in oil. And i did have to add coolant at 10k. No other leaks. Where does it go 🤔

On my old E92 it was the oil pressure switch malfunctioning. It didn't mean the car had low pressure but there were false readings. Could be the sensor itself. Worth keeping in mind as well the valve problem.

Same here with the coolant level, 10500 miles and it came on and haven't had anything since so seems common on the 40i engine as some have said. Have to admit I haven't had an oil warning come on yet but i think i will check that tonight just to be sure!

How many miles has your car done Walt? Some B58 are suffering from collapsed oil filter elements.

Never had the oil warning light come on, but checking the oil level on the iDrive, it doesn't use any oil at all. I do however change the oil about half-way between services.

Coolant - the main expansion tank had to be topped up on a couple of occasions, but it seems to stabilise. The expansion tank for the charge air cooler is another matter. Twice have I taken it in to Coopers, and twice have I been told they've done a pressure check and not being able to find the leak, as well as being told it's normal. There's nothing normal about a leak from a closed system in my engineering mind... Let's see what Sytner's say for the end of warranty check.

The only suspected cause for loss of coolant would be safety expansion bottle cap releasing some steam under high temps. These are fail safe devices and designed to do that in the even of overheat, but you"ll find some might have lesser tolerances and will let some pressure out over the time which will equal into small amount of coolant loss. Other then that I wouldn't worry about it at all.

They only disintegrate at the hands of the technician changing it, not in service. And it's due to the access to the actual filter housing (under the inlet manifold), it takes care to replace the filter, which some technicians are not blessed with.

Really? I'm sure I read stories of owner having problem on the first service.
